Home ownership, a joy and a nightmare! The windows in my house are builder grade vinyl that should never be sold to anyone. But that’s what has happened to thousands of homes and now good windows are a rare commodity. I have a twin window in my basement that needed replacement for a variety of reasons but I have not found a window that suits me.
So last fall when I came across a high quality French patio door at a greatly reduced price that I could make fit, I jumped on it.

It has been leaning against a wall in my basement all winter, that is until last week. It was demolition time!

The brick removal took more time than I thought. But these brick are no longer available so I wanted to salvage as many as possible. A diamond blade and a masonry hammer drill came into play along with a 2 lb hammer and a wide chisel

The window removal was simple by comparison but still had to be cut out with a reciprocal saw as the nails holding it in were behind the brick. The frame wasn’t worth salvaging anyway.

No turning back now.

That’s a 2x6 wall , another reason I bought the door as it came with the wide jamb.

I put everything back in with pressure treated lumber, wasn’t much anyway.

Closed back in with still a lot of shimming and adjusting. French doors can be a pain.

Sure does look different from the inside. Lots of trim work left to do inside and out, but for now, let it rain!
Another big plus! I can now roll my bike into the living area like Chris does the Cobra bike.
