Final Drive Oil
(1/1)
Dirty Dave:
Didn't remember the last time I inspected the gear oil on the final drive of my 97 Std.
When I removed the 17 mm inspection/fill plug, a buncha oil oozed out over the tire & floor.
I understand the level should come up to the bottom rim of the threaded hole.
Nobody touches the Valk but me and I can't even understand how someone would be
able to overfill the final drive like that.
Thoughts?
Chrisj CMA:
If someone filled it to overflow while on the side stand and and then you check it with the bike vertical it would present as overfilled because it would be overfilled. All this filling and overflowing and mess is so unnecessary. Drain and fill when the drive is removed during a tire change. Only add 150cc and nothing needs to overflow.
Jess from VA:
My car tires last for years, so I have to change it when the rear drive is on the bike.
Kind of a PITA as when level, it has to go in sideways (I have a long skinny funnel, but very slow feed).
However, last time I got got good rear end dope in a bag (Valvoline flex-fill full synthetic), and that nozzle goes right in the hole.

I always added the measured amount according to OEM while on its kickstand but on the jack level upright position, right to the bottom of the threads it flowed. Had an issue with Clymers wrong procedure info on the VT1100 Spirit that led to a overfill and all over my rear tire. My only time I bought non OEM Honda manual when needed. It had good info but they dropped the ball on that one. There no short cut IMO just add the proper 5.1 oz. My very recent service I rigged a ultra small PLASTIC funnel and a piece of 3/8" rubber hose 6" lg. to flex around the exhaust into the fill port. For measure I use a 2" D x 3 3/4" T pill bottle as its exactly 5.1 oz. to the top of the protruding ring. Yeh I'm retired with collection "I can use that don't throw away" stuff with adequate tools laying around. ;D
