Had a credit card hacked. Called card company. Followed correct steps. Cancelled card. Had new card issued.  Next month used again by  same person. Called card company , cancelled card ,next month card used again by same person.
Fighting this for a while. Product company disputed charge back and won as there were five successful deliveries to address.
Saw my banker in person. She said ( pay attention) cancel a credit card and wait at least two to three days to renew.  Reoccurring charges transfer over to the new card automatically.
Recovery in process as now police are involved.

While not the same, but similar, I had my credit card information stolen while I was on a motorcycle ride with the wife.  It did not happen on each trip but it seemed to be linked to gas stations where I paid at the pump and one time, maybe a restaurant.

For each event I notified the card company (a bank) and they blocked the card and worked to ensure the charges were frauds and I was not charged.  The card was re-issued (new card, number, etc).

I believed, after personal investigation, that the gasoline stations had a method that they could use to steal the card information.  And no, it was not always at the pump.  Twice, (at least as I remember) it occurred when I took my card into the station and had the "clerk" run the card and make the charge happen after I pumped the gas.

I no longer use my credit card at a gas pump or inside at the station.  I have purchased several "Debit" cards that I now use for all my gas pump charges.

The only card I have found that may be used at the pump and use a PIN, is Vanilla Visa.  Cost for a card is about $6.00.

I have also read (from other reasonable reliable sources) that the only way a credit card should be used (at gas pump or at another service with which you are not familiar) is us a "TAP" card reader.  That communication with the "bank" is, I have been told, encrypted and is very unlikely to be "stolen".

The only real exception to this is when I am asked for my card at the Hotel/Motel at which we are staying.

So, I used my Cash Debit card on the road and "cash" unless I am working with a bank or other business I trust.

yah, use the TAP reader at gas stations if possible.  I get 99% of my gas at 2 local costco's both TAP card reader no insert cards in slot reason why costco gas is convenient and 10-20 cents per gallon cheaper than any other local gas station we both fill up weekly about 60 bucks of gas weekly for 2 vehicles total.

I have had 2x's in my life my other credit card false charges scanned both chip readers where had to insert the card in a slot.  both times checked my credit card statement, got my money back by calling credit card company, then issuing me a new cc number.

Last year I had two debit cards and a credit card compromised in 6 months. The first debit card was used at two wing restaurants in town the second one was used to buy a $400 wig at an online store. After that one my wife had just left for TN so I couldn't use hers. I had to use cash until my new card came.  I use my debit card all the time. I don't carry cash very often. Its very inconvenient. Now I have a monitoring system on my card. Right after the card is used I get a text on my phone. So far so good.

I'm curious how you could have a card reissued (with a different card number I assume) and have the person who hacked your old card get access to the new card's number. Maybe he had access to data from a merchant you use for recurring transactions.

Personally I avoid using debit cards except for getting cash at an ATM. If a hacker gets my card number, I'd rather it be a credit card, so they have access to the bank's funds rather than my personal account.

Some card issuers offer 'virtual credit card numbers'. These let you generate a unique card number on their website for use at online merchants. Once a transaction is made the CVV code becomes invalid, so the card can't be reused unless you go online and generate a new CVV number. You can also deactivate the unique card number whenever you want. It's a bit inconvenient, but nice to know your actual credit card number isn't on file with dozens of merchants.

Here's a scam you don't hear about very often. Every morning, my bank sends an email if my checking account was debited the previous day. One morning, I got a message that a charge was made by a utility company that doesn't even operate in my state. I called the bank and they opened a case, determined it wasn't me, and refunded the money to my account.

Apparently it is easy to use 'Bill Pay' to pay your utility bill with another person's account. If you walk up to the service desk in a Walmart, grocery or pharmacy chain store, show them a utility bill with an account number, and give them the numbers from the bottom of the check your grandma sent you for your birthday, grandma will end up paying your utility bill! The banker I spoke with confirmed it was that easy. It's a good reason to look over your checking statement each month.

I never did find out how my account number was used to pay a utility bill for someone else. It may have been a typo by the store employee making the bill pay entry, or maybe someone got one of the checks I mailed to pay a bill or make a contribution.

IF you write a check anyone can scan it and put it in their account from their phone.

Around 20 years ago we noted our debit card was being used not by us, and was making a trip to the east coast.

We worked with a local police detective who was determined to get the folks.

We tracked it down to them trying to check in to a fancy hotel in I believe it was the Boston area.

Local police contacted Boston police, told them what to look for, gave them a major fraud case on a silver platter.

The Boston police picked the folks up.

...then released them, refused to press charges. It was too much paperwork to deal with.

I was tempted to make a road trip and deliver some Texas style justice but declined, just shut the card off and moved on.

Still bitter about that to this day.

For practicality, I travel with at least two CCs (Plus a debit card that I almost never use) from two different financial institutions for redundancy. I also tend to keep "Get me home" cash stashed on the bike, but prefer to use the card as much as possible.

As was mentioned, using tap to pay is far more secure than swiping the card.

Another layer is to add your card to your phone and use your phone's tap to pay functionality. That adds even more encryption in and also makes the card itself (With its' numbers) no longer visible to surveillance.
