Just a small update - Guest access has been turned on, and some other tweaks have been done behind the scenes while troubleshooting the issue. Possible hardware issue...

Trying to get things stabilized, and once that's done will look at an upgrade path to a more modern version of the forum.

...but don't wanna try an upgrade of that magnitude while we're already on shaky ground.

This is the first time I could get the site to work in days.   (Even early in the morning)

Whatever the problem, it's a pity it got so bad.

I missed talking with friends and staying in touch.

Running other  sites  this  happens...
You just mut go with the  flow..
Knowing the  ones  who run it will work hard  to get it up and  running.
Sometimes  it takes  time.  And  also when it's  a  server issue  , the  powers that be .
Can only work how  fast the  server workers  work...

It is  what it is  and  will get fixed ...

Our server dude told me one of the hard drives is acting wonky (quote).  He's not sure if that would cause our issues, but they are going to replace it.  I don't know yet when that will happen, but when it does, the site will be down for 30-45 minutes.

I understand the above.  And the site is responding much faster now than yesterday at this time.  And, just for the record, guests were listed as 3028.  But only three real people signed in.

Appreciate the work being done and it seems to have helped.  I hope things continue to improve.

Again, thanks to all who are working on this issue.   cooldude cooldude cooldude

Oops. I spoke to soon.  I got an insufficient storage message when I clicked post below.   But, I got back here fairly easily.

Restrict all guest to cut down on bots.

We can't (or shouldn't) completely restrict all guests as new members need to access the homepage to register.  We can restrict guests from looking at various boards but the side impact of that is prospective members have nothing to look at to see that it would be worth their while to join.

Would site performance improve if obsolete or non-motorcycle content is removed? Classified ads or birthday greetings from years ago?  Rather like cleaning out the garage.

It's difficult to post with this Insufficient Storage issue.

I'm willing to help in any way possible, but having zero experience of web-site management, I have no idea how.

I'm sure others feel this way also.

In a past life I was a system engineer responsible for designing, installing and managing the hardware and software for close to 200 domains foreign & domestic for transactional processing on numerous web farms.

There should be no down time to replace a failing hard drive.  If they're using RAID & hot swap drives (like they should be) and are using  SNMP to monitor the hardware they should just unplug the failing drive and plug the new one in.

I don't know much about the platform or system configuration being used but if anyone wants it I'd be happy to help if I can,  just reach out to me.  One other idea that I didn't state in my earlier post would be to run a compact / repair on the database.

The hard drive was replaced late Friday.  Any current problems are unrelated to that.

IDK if it's related, but the number of "guests" has gone down considerably, while access is more normal.

Just a question. I looked at the number of users after I had some problems posting a reply.

The number of guests was around 1300 or so.

I looked at the number of users on line (4 I think) and saw there were two "hidden" (I think that was the term ) users.  I was not aware you could hide while you were signed in.

Is there a "reason" to do this?

I believe the Hidden is from an option in the user profile settings "Show others your online status?"  can be selected or deselected.
