USA wins Gold!!  cooldude

I grew up on an island in MI, playing ice hockey every winter (on frozen Lake Erie).  My folks had season tickets to the Detroit Red Wings, and I got to see many games.   But I never loved hockey and have not followed it much.  Watching the Gold medal game today reminded me why;  it's a very frustrating game slipping and sliding around all day at top speed for a few hard fought goals.  This is why hockey is known for fist fights (esp NHL).  Grin

I was surprised to discover overtime was only 3 on 3 play.  It used to be 4 on 4 and (terrible) shootouts.  Researching this, I read many complaints about 3 on 3, and how it completely changes the game.

Anyway, both the USA Men's and Women's Olympic Gold Medals were won 3 on 3 in overtime.

Additionally, Pro (NHL and other) players are on the Olympic teams.

(I apologize for barging into a New England Chapter thread.)
(I hope all you guys are all warm and safe in that big high wind blizzard up there.)

I was able to watch the third period and the overtime play-off.  I was worried about overtime because Canada appeared to out skate the US in the third period. I was very happy that the the US was able to take the game in over time. Yahoo!  cooldude

Jess, I played pond hockey growing up. Lots of fun! A bunch of us rented a rink in the wee hours of the night a couple of times to play. Good times. It's been many years since I've skated now. Thanks for the well-wishes for safety in the upcoming snow storm. It's gonna be an historic storm.  Shocked

Tony, my old ankles would not take ice skating kindly.  I fell on my azz 10 times after our recent ice storm wearing good boots.

Remembering (way) back to skating and hockey on Lake Erie, the wind, waves, currents and snow made smooth ice hard to come by, and much of the time it was just heaved up snowy chunks.  But once in a while we'd get 1-3 feet thick pure glass to skate on.  Guys would make big canvas kites to use as sails and skate 50mph in the wide open winds out there.   But the ice got progressively thinner the farther out you went and going through or off the end of it would have been a frigid death.  Mom would worry and tell us kids not to go way out there.

I'm glad I don't live in that kind of weather anymore.  My 96yo mom still does, and walks outdoors daily (on her walker) if there's no ice or snow.

No VA is just getting the edge of this storm.  Rain all day, mixed with snow (slush) all night.  Hopefully it melts off right away.

The U.S. didn't look good in the second period, nor most of the third...Had it not been for outstanding goal tending, the U.S. could have easily been down 3-1 or possibly 4-1....

Had I been sitting in a bar enjoying a few brews while watching the game, I'm sure my language would have caused me to be escorted out....

Hunkering down for a day or two...

That's the way I saw the game too.  The Canuks appeared to be nearly all older more experienced NHL guys, and the US team younger guys.  The US guys could skate, but the Canadians worked much better as a team.  We got lucky on that OT breakaway at the end.

Capitalize on your opponents mistakes... We did it better this game.

Great game.

That was a ADVANCED PHD CLASS in goaltending on both sides.

I felt bad for Brad Marchand, he most likely will not repeat an Olympic attendance.
