In Wales, Ice Hockey is very much a minority sport. I certainly don't know anyone who plays it, plus, I couldn’t name any famous hockey player.
I was brought up with Rugby Union with football and cricket close seconds.
Today I watched the Ice Hockey final between USA and Canada and I thought it was brilliant.
I thoroughly enjoyed the speed and skills of the game plus a little bit of spice with the physical side of it.
Well done USA.
I'll be watching again.

I don’t follow or watch Hockey but it’s always fun to beat a sports rival.   Apparently a good game from what I have heard.

Way to bring home the GOLD, USA!!!  angel  cooldude

I keep seeing “ice hockey” references here .
Do these people also talk about court basketball, field football or diamond baseball?   2funny
Based on previous conversations, it seems most on here have never played hockey. Hockey is an absolutely amazing sport; full of speed, skill, grace, and violence! Most do not appreciate
Hockey having never played and look at it like roller derby  tickedoff
Hint: it is played on ICE. Frozen ice, as someone just defined it…   coolsmiley  2funny

Pretty sure the other sports mentioned are mostly Summer Olympic Events with the possible exception of football (not a qualifying sport).  Never having been exposed or played hockey, definitely affects the interest I have in the sport.  Very similar to figure skating.   Except for the skiing events, just not into those other arena type events.

The only difference I see in the two skating events is the lack of physical alterations in one versus the other.  Wink  I think it really comes down to what sports one was exposed to in younger years.   Simply put, there were no ice skating rinks anywhere I called home.

It's called 'ice' hockey because there is also indoor and outdoor 'field' hockey (on grass and gym floors).

Understood.  Was never exposed to those sports either.   Pretty much only participated in what could/should be considered American sports.

“It's called 'ice' hockey because there is also indoor and outdoor 'field' hockey (on grass and gym floors).” ” Nope ! “ hockey is played on frozen ice.  No need to explain hockey is a sport, played only on frozen ice.
Those “also” activities not sports, are on field or gym for losers with no athletic abilities, go ahead define them as such. Do we now have to say “field football” ?!?? Hey, there’s also electronic football  2funny
Better say “diamond baseball” now, eh!!! HEY, there’s also Fantasy Baseball!!!

What a nail biter that game was. We looked great in the first period but innthe second and third it really seemed the Canadian’s came alive and kept the heat on us.

That OT goal was a thing of beauty and truly amazing.  Cheesy Cheesy Wink

The celebration after the medal ceremony was terrific and what a truly great gesture the whole team had by keeping the memory of Johnny Gaudreau with the team. It was great how they had his kids out on the ice for the photo session. These guys were a class act!  cooldude

YouTube has some great short videos of them sings and celebrating in the locker room, if you have time and are interested seeing our guys having fun take a couple minutes and look them up, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  cooldude Smiley

Huh?

The only similar thing is both are on skates on ice.  Other than that, nothing is the same.

Even the way of propulsion and stopping are different.

The skill set of a competent pro hockey player is amazing. Even the "Goons" have to skate backwards. Smiley

Try taking a hockey stick and a tennis ball and run from one end of a parking lot to the other while keeping the ball on stick.  Then try that on roller blades. Then try that on ice on skates and with a puck and 5 other guys trying to stop you.

My first set of skates were figure skates, as I got the hand-me-downs from my older sisters.
I had to Black Shoe Polish them and saved my pennies to get some proper CCM hockey skates.

What a great game.  Goaltenders shined.

Hellebuyck won the game for the USA. Canada's offense dominated with 42 shots vs. 28, and he stopped all but one. Without his amazing performance I doubt it would have reached OT.

That winning shot by Jack Hughes was beautiful! Right between the legs of the goalie.

Hook,
I have no doubts about the skills required, I mean no disrespect toward the players.  It’s just not a game that interests me, Olympics or not.

Rams, I don't consider your opinion as disrespectful at all.  I understand you don't have experience or interest in hockey.

IMHO, hockey is underrated in the USA and I believe it to be the best true raw sport that brings power, endurance and skill together.

Also, it has not been effected by political BS, yet.

Yeah, we loved the outside in winter as kids.  Building forts in the snow piles from the plows. One on each side of the road for snowball fights. Sleds and toboggans were awesome.  We used to check each other for blue lips, if you had them you were told to go home. Ha, like we were the cold police. Due to poor ground levels, our neighbors back yard would flood every winter and create a skating rink and although they tried to fix it, too our enjoyment, they couldn't.

20 years ago, I remember riding through a neighborhood full of large snow banks and asking my buddy "Where's the kids?"

One word answer.
