The link shows a 240 which won't work on the stock rim, also won't have room for it without modifying the swingarm. The 205 car tire I have on only has about 1/8" or less clearance of the swingarm and that 240 is more than 1/8" wider.

That first pic is the one that confirmed my eventual Valkyrie-filled future.     If I ever get another Valkyrie to play with...     I don't remember where I copied the following and I believe the site no longer exists.  

Builder: BadMax

From a German builder of hot Vmax's.  Metzeler 240/40-18 on 8.5" widened and raised stock rim (Metzeler specifies 8" minimum rim width), 180/70-18 on the front.  The drag bars, round Honda mirrors, and Kellerman bar-end turn signals look great together.  The Europeans seem to have a keen eye for tasteful customization.  The European bikes just seem to look like a factory custom.  From the BadMax site (badmax.de), as translated by Altavista:

1. Rocker change kit with rim for 240 tire. Change Original rocker with all distances, adapters and knockout spindle in black (powder-coated), as well as rim change on 8.5 inch with Metzeler 240/40-18 tires (rims highly polished or powder-coats). DM 5,500. [$2,425 USD a/o Jan. 2002]

2. Shield [fender] in the back for 240 change for solo operation (unlacquered). DM 980 [$432 USD a/o Jan. 2002]

3. Front wheel change on 5,0 inch in front. Change of the front wheel on 5.0 inch with Metzeler 180-70-18 tyre (rims highly polished or powder-coats). DM 1,750. [$772 USD a/o Jan. 2002]

Everything looks 100% stock and un-modified. i.e. shocks, swing, caliper, rotor,wheel [chromed], rear drive [paint/powder]. The fender however appears to have opened it all up to fit.

Guess if ya want to find a tire and chop your fender it'll work. But, alas...there goes the handling [more vertical in the turns!]. Nowhere near as bad a lean reduction as Dogg's beautiful creation though.

I donno 'bout dat.  Comparing it to my wheel, the rim is wider.  The brake rotor is almost inside it.  On my wheel the brake rotor is nowhere near inside the rim.  Unless I'm tripp'n again, this is no stock wheel.

Ya know, the more i look at the the rim, you can see the bead that was added for width, but if you look real close it looks like it is offset to the left side swingarm, (looking from the rear) to give the clearance for the drive shaft tube, without doing the mod Dogg did how else could you get the clearance ? the rim itself must be custom to offset for clearance .

I noticed that too, but chalked it up to an illusion created by the chrome sheen.

Ifin' the left side [only] of the wheel was built out it would cause a tracking issue from front to rear that I wouldn't find personally acceptable just to look cool...

Ah, but then too. my early life cataracts could be the problem also.

I have a spare swingarm so went out to measure the internal width. Couldn't get an exact figure because of where I have it stashed it's not real accessible, but it appears to be approx. 9" wide. A 240 is roughly .06" under 9.5", so it would seem to me that it wouldn't take too much work on the right side of the swingarm to gain that extra fraction needed to clear it. Looks like the big expense would be modifying the rear wheel, making it wide enough to accept a 240 tire. Guess you'd also have to toss in the fender expense as well, that OEM sure won't cut it. If the owner of the one ride we're looking at basically did a slight mod to the swingarm internal clearance and then widened the wheel to accept the 240, but did it in a manner that kept it centered, then you wouldn't have an off-center tracking problem. Too bad some close-up shots of the rear wheel aren't available, I'll bet we'd have a few 240's running around at IZ.

I'd love to be able to do something like that to my Valk, better yet....I'l love to have the extra $$ to be able to afford it.

The first blown Valkyrie I ever saw was set up essentially as a drag bike and the drive shaft tube had been notched to allow a wide tire to fit without rubbing.  I don't have pics to refer to and don't remember what the rear wheel was, but it looked like a relatively easy mod.

Yep, Kosman is the guy. They do a 3/8" offset to the rear wheel to give clearance. It does change the center line of the bike.

Where can I buy it???

I've seen several wheels very similar to that on  Rocket 3's.  They do look nice and didn't seem to affect handling too much compared a stock Valk width tire. I've got a GYTT on back of my IS for most of last summer and that's a fair bit of width back there too, not near as pretty as that nice wide MC tire though.

JeffK - I'm over in Norfolk, VA all summer.

I'm currently in search of a rear end assembly to use as my first "core" to be modified. I have a Hitchdoc and Champion hard bags on my bike. I'd like to be able to develope this to work with all Valkyries. Right now my thought is to make the fender by combining oem front half and an aftermarket. This will be more complicated, but will result in being compatible with all aftermarket seats. I'm not sure how to work around sissy bar and trunk mounting as of yet.

It's my official mission to get that 140/50-16 Metz on the back of my Valk, ASAP!  If someone figures out how to mod the swingarm so that this tire can be mounted centered, I don't care how much it costs... I'm gonna be all over it.  I rather doubt this can actually be done though. The best this German guy could do still had on offset wheel. I don't mind paying for widening my wheel, but I want it dead centered. No offset. If someone figures a way to do this, theres gonna be a lot of Valkyries running around with beefy meats, myself included.

Way back in the day.......Direct Line was selling a Big Wheel kit.......best memory was about $2500-$3500 and that included the new wheel, swingarm and new Progressive shocks......not sure about the fender though. I also dont know if they actually sold any either.

I did buy a Pinwall rear swing arm and axle off of ebay this morning.

I know that Avon suggests a min rim of 7" for the 240 Cobra. I ran a 275/50-16 on a factory 16x7 Mustang Pony wheel for years
