I was down in AZ last week and 3 times I ran out of fuel at about 1/2 tank. Switched to res and got to a fuel stop w/ no further problems. I met another valk rider at a fuel stop
and asked about this. He said petcock was going bad to switch to a Pingel. I've read enough about the OEM petcock here, so I think I'll just get a pingel. I checked Pingel's
site and got # 1311CH for the valk. Is this the right one?? I think I want to eliminate the
vacuum line and this one seems to be it. Also, any place better or cheaper than getting it from Pingel. Thanks for the help !!

The 1311CH is the correct one for the non-vacuum application. I have the same one. Simplicity in it's finest!

The CH means Chrome body and Hex shaped body. A CR has a round body if want something different. CHV and CRV uses the vacuum shutoff diaphragm.

That might have been me you talked to. I recall talking about fuel valves with someone. Was it at D&D Discount MC or the Pavillions car/MC show on a Sat night?

Got any plans for the OEM one after you take it off?

Mike, What do you do with these old OEM's???  I've got one I took off if you need one. I rebuilt it twice last year alone, and still no workie right :uglystupid2: So the inner parts are new.

A rebuilt OEM in the saddlebag might save a ride for me or someone someday... it's a small thing, known
to break sometimes... you probably rebuilt yours correctly and some part of it is warped or something,
but if you sent it to me and it passed my (Shoptalk's) vacuum test, I'd carry it...

Tundra,
When you say not working right after rebuild what was wrong?
Thanks Steve

I'm still a factory petcock user. I could use a spare also. Rebuilt or not.

Tundra

Mike, It's yours. Send me a pm with your address. Keep in mind I would check this out before relying on it. I replaced it for a reason (it sucks) or maybe it wasn't sucking, when it was supposed to ;D

Steve, I had the same symptoms as above, running out of fuel early, loss of power, fuel starvation. I got sick of pulling the tank and messing with it.

Just installed the 1311CH, pluged the vacumn line with a screw, seems to work fine, glad I did it.   :cooldude: hoser

Is it that simple, replace the stock petcock with the non vacuum model pingel and plug the vacuum line?  Just got my 2000 standard and would like to avoid this potential problem.  thanks, Ed

Hoser, remove the vacuum line and then cap it.

Mike,
It will be mailed to you in the morning. I did remove the fuel selector from it. Hope you can use yours if needed. I JB Welded the fuel selector inside my engine hanger, I did not want to loose my engine hangers and hated that hole, so that was my fix, looks good. I'll be sending you a brand new viton #6 vacuum line also, as I now have no need for it. I could use it as a straw for sippen lemonade, but you'll get more use out of it.

Thank you. I'll let you know if I can make it pass my (Shoptalk's) vacuum test, and certainly let you know if it ever saves someone's
ride...

Hey All,

Have read most of the posts on the site and tested out my petcock to day by trying to run out of gas in the "OFF" position ( Actually forgot to turn it to "ON"!!!!!) and the bike did not run out of fuel in the "OFF" position, so I now am in the bad petcock bunch. SOOOO....  I will be pulling the tank, but want to stick with the OEM for now....  Ran for 20 plus minutes and went around the block on "OFF".

Can someone send me the link to the rebuild post and what to order from HDL?

I don't want to pingle because I often forget to turn off the petcock... Had an 85 wing that I never touched the petcock except in the winter.... so I got bad habits....   ;)

Any and all help would be appreciated,

Brad

Blackduck

A point to watch with these petcocks. If the selector knob is binding it will allow fuel  to flow.
This means any time you remove the petcock you have to make sure it is positioned so there is not side load/binding of the selector when you tighten the retaining screw.
There is not much clearance between the selector and bracket and it only takes a little misalignment to cause this to happen.
Found this by accident. My petcock had the bleed orifice blocked and held vacuum on the petcock, while tightening the selector retaining screw fuel started to leak from the valve. I had not connected the fuel hose or would have missed it.
So if you have a petcock that does not shut off try undoing the screw, remove the selector knob and test ride it again.

The part you need is called a "cover set". While you're in there, changing out the screen
could be worthwhile...

04 SCREEN SET 16952-MZ0-003 $12.00
05 COVER SET,rooster 16953-MBZ-B51 $27.90

There's an easy vacuum test in the Shoptalk article that will help you make sure you did
the rebuild properly before you put your bike back together...

Matt, just call them.  They're pretty knowledgeable.  When I called them back in December, they even called Pingel to make sure I was ordering the correct petcock.
