Mine started squeaking a little when I would release clutch. Same as it does on ant vehicle that I've owned. About 2 weeks later it went out totally on the way to the bike shop.

Somewhere out West, Which way did I go?

Mine started transmitting a vibration through the pegs to my hooves.  I BABIED it while riding it home (I was 150 miles from home) and put another hundred or so miles on while waiting for the new part to arrive.

When they finally roll over and give up the ghost... they can start clattering around inside the swingarm.

When replacing it... MAKE ABOSLUTELY CERTAIN that you get ALL of the shards of metal cleaned out from ALL over the inside of the swing arm.  I missed one... and it worked its way to the final drive, trashed the seal for the shaft/final drive union... and moisture got in and trashed the teeth up.

+1 on the rumbling in the pegs. I first noticed a rumbling in the pegs when I let off of the throttle, and it gradually got worse.

You'll feel the vibration in your footpegs. You WILL know it when you feel it. Good time to totally drain and replace your gear oil with synthetic. Replace the dampers too. (your in there anyway) The bike will ride like new cooldude

you will feel it in your pegs under light throttle like as you go over a small hill and let off the throttle a little.

I feel a little feedback when I let off the gas at around 55 or 60. But only on the high way pegs. Does that sound like a ujoint? Thanks

I've not lost a u-joint but I did wear out a pinion gear.  "A little feedback" would be accurate for what I felt.  I noticed it mainly in the grips.  Perhaps my feet aren't as sensitive as they should be.   Wink

Depending how bad your u-joint is...when you rock the bike back and forth in gear (motor off), you can notice a clicking sound.  You can also feel it popping if you put your hand on the axle tube.

Mine went out while I was at InZane last year.  It didn't go completely out but probably would have on the ride home.  I replaced it with Daniel's help.

Describe "feel a little feedback".  Is it a soft thud, or more of a crisp metallic one?  Reason I ask is... a soft thud will transmit to you with an abrupt let off of the throttle, or an abrupt of engaging the throttle when your rear wheel dampners are worn.

Ratdog, I get thump which I suspect are the dampers. But the feedback will last for several seconds. It does it on my Standard and my Inte rstate. It is like a weak vibration, I feel it through the highway pegs only. Thanks.

145,000+ and just had my second u-joint give out - first time, (80,000+) had plenty of warning -  clatter now and then under torque, but stop when i kept the rpm's slow and low.  went out all of a sudden yesterday at hwy speed - went from running fine one moment, to lots of grinding and clatter the next, until i pulled in the clutch.  looking back over the last few weeks, i did notice a very slight bit of rougher shifting - not as smooth, but nothing else noteworthy.  disassembling now. tire is off, splines are fine.  will pull shaft when i go back out.  DOES ANYONE HAVE A NEW U JOINT FOR SALE, OR KNOW A SOURCE?  i don't think i've gone without riding for more than 5 days in a row since the last time this happend.  one of the members on this board drove up here to western oklahoma from dallas area with a new u joint and helped me install it.  to this day i am amazed at that, and the class and decency of just about everyone on this board.  hope honda comes out with an upgraded valkyrie so we don't become a dying breed.

Ok... that helps.  Well... I'd take the route of ruling out the easy stuff first... then go digging deeper afterwards.  See if you can see an abnormality after pulling the rubber boot aside (ujoint), see if you can initiate any movement of the parts at rest by reaching in there and seeing if it'll move around too.  If that doesn't net you a definate diagnosed problem... pull the wheel and check the wheel bearings, especially the L/side one.  I don't recall ever hearing of a R/side failure.  Then... check your drive flange splines to see if they're dry... inspect the O-rings.  Continue digging by pulling the final drive and popping off the drive shaft and inspect those splines.  Then... pull the U-joint and give it a thorough inspection.  While things are apart... do your inspection of your wheel dampners and make up your shopping list of maint. parts which you'll need as it goes back together.

Thanks, Got one on the way. Hope I don't need it yet. But I am sure I will in the future as I have the Standard and the Interstate.
