It unscrews...........15 or 17mm I think.........NOW......you wouldnt be talking about the little chrome vent cap that you dont do nothin with wud ya?

Mikey

+1... from experience, it makes a real mess of your rear rim if you try to fill thru the vent, then drive on a gravel road.
Remember folks, street lights timed for 35 mph are also timed for 70 mph

On the expanded drawing at the link below, Part 22 is the drain plug, Part 2 is the fill plug, and Part 5 is the breather cap that you don't need to bother with.

Lemme hazzard a scarry guess.........you filled it through the vent until it started overflowing through the vent so the whole pumkin was slam full.......the thing only takes 150cc and if you use a hose and funnel to pour the 150 cc in on the side stand none will overflow at all.  However it is much eaiser to fill it while its off as in a tire change

I understand the unit takes only 5.1 oz of fluid and have not put any back b/c I cannot get the "filler cap" off.    The drain plug is back in place with washer torqued to 14 ftlbs but I still need to get the filler cap off to replace the gear oil.   Does anyone know how it comes off?

As stated 2 posts above the filler bolt is number 2 in the schematic. Click on the link. You may be trying to remove the vemnt cap which is #5, not what you want.

Apply a 17mm box or open end wrench (like the one from the on-board toolkit) and turn counter-clockwise. It can be a  :tickedoff: to get at since it sits directly behind the muffler.

CTNV

I must not be explaining myself correctly.    I need to fill the unit with fresh oil and it has already  been drained.   The drain plug as been replaced along with the washer.    I cannot get the filler cap off b/c I cannot remeber how it comes off, screws off, pulls off, etc.    I do not touch the breather cap and understand there are three options.   Drain plug, filler cap and breather cap.    Does anyone get it?     The filler cap I have turned with an 8mm allen wrench and it does not come off but turns and turns and turns.   No,   it is not stripped.    What is the secret?

Is this a joke?  The axle has a hex head on it.........are you cranking on the end of the axle?  If so it shouldnt be turning unless the axle nut is off or very loose.........Im confused by what you are trying to do here

Valker

The filler cap is about 1 1/2 inches across with a 17 or 19mm hexagonal bolt head molded into it. If you are spinning something, using a hex key on something, or see chrome on it-you are NOT looking at the filler cap. Look at the pictures other folks posted above. It sounds like you are messing with the breather cap to me.

Valker the vent has no hex head on it.....the only thing on the whole pumpkin with a hex head is the end of the axle.......but as I said.......that shouldnt turn unless the nut on the brake side has been loosened or removed.....If the wheel is off the axle and its hex head wouldnt be there to confuse him..........I dont know.......sometimes you wish there was a video

As said by others, the filler cap is removed with a 17mm or 19mm wrench, not an Allen wrench.  By the way, #25 in the first picture and #3 in the second picture are shown installed incorrectly.  The axle (#3) goes in from the right and the nut (#25) is on the left.  It was the axle that you were trying to turn, but the filler plug is #2 (first picture).

Thats Purdy!   WOW

Dang nice chrome!!! I'm with chrisj, I think hes trying the axle, since its the only allen headed bolt. The filler cap is the recessed rearward bolt.

Ok, so you have been cranking on the axle.........my question is ... Why does it turn.....if the thing was torqued to 81ftlbs theres no way your gonna turn it with an allen key????

CTNV

Thanks.   I was messing with the axle nut.

Chris, notice I said the filler cap, not the vent. A hex head is a six sided bolt head, a recessed hex hole is usually referred to as Allen head and uses a 'key' to open.

I know Valker......I was referring to the fact he said he used an 8mm allen on something so it couldnt be the vent cap......thats all.  He has us all going cause he was calling the axle the fill cap........jus tone of them things

All I can claim with the part pictured is fantastically amazing internet search skills!  I searched "valkyrie final drive" in google images and this (with similar photos) appeared amongst the clutter.  Also, I seem to remember someone else pointing out the part drawing error awhile ago, so I wasn't surprised to see it.

now..............about that loose axle...............

I'm not sure how full I filled it... but it emptied about as fast as I had filled it, once I started riding :D After that, I got back on here, learned of my error, and drained and properly refilled the rear end. SH** happens... live and learn, and hope like hell you don't break anything while you're learning !  :cooldude:

Ok i should have read here first as the manual confused me. I did drain it and fill it through the breather cap apparently. And I did have a bit of a mess afterword. I did not fill it to overflowing and did only put 5.1oz in. Bent the cap up pretty good also trying to figure how that came off (ordered a new one today). Anyway I just added some more gear oil as I don't know how much I lost or why it apparently dripped out of the breather cap. Not sure if I should drain and refill the proper way now before taking a 1800 mile trip from Escondido through Death Valley to Northern CA coast. Did the oil I put into the breather cap get to the right place? Need a GOOD opinion ASAP leaving on Monday and need to figure if i need to do something today as I will be busy looking for Easter Eggs tomorrow all day!

Thanks,

Rich

The oil got to the right place......but Id drain it all out and put 150cc of synthetic hypoid gear oil in befre such a trip
