As a LONG TIME Americade Attendee (I've been going since it was called Aspencade East, held in mid-May, and subject to occassional snow squalls) I would like to extend a friendly invite to any and all VRCC members who plan to attend Americade 2010: I am a newbie to this great organization, (purchasing my 2000 Interstate last November) but have offered a similar invite in past years to "family" members in the Star Touring club and the Harley Dressers Association. I have a modest home, immediately off the Thruway exit in Schroon Lake. (aprox. 25 miles North of Lake George Village) I would like to invite any members attending the Americade, to my house, for a start-up fare of pastries, muffins and coffee, followed by an incredible tour to the top of Whiteface Mountain. For those unfamiliar with the Adirondacks, the loop of roadways that lead to and around Whiteface, are some of the most scenically spectacular in the Eastern U.S.. You will be surrounded by rugged High Peaks, crystal clear mountain lakes and great sites of interest, like High Falls Gorge, John Brown's Farm and the impressive Olympic Ski Jump site. The loop we'll be doing will be aproximately 130 miles in length....highlighted by the halfway goal of riding up the 8-mile paved toll road that leads to the nearly 5000 foot summit of Whiteface. From which, on a clear day, you can see Montreal, Vermont, Massachusettes and Most of the Adirondack parkland. At the top, there is a tunnel to an elevator, which climbs to the very TOP. Or, you can join me on an eigth-of-a-mile jagged rock trail that climbs STRAIGHT UP for the equivilent of 19 stories!! (I do this annually, to check my 55 year old heart) After Whiteface, we'll follow Rt. 86 toward Lake Placid, angling down toward the ski-jump site. (We can visit there too if all agree) Then, wind along 73 as it parallels a miniscule Hudson River, before a final stop at one of the greatest taxidermy/gift stores you'll ever encounter. If this interests any of you, just add a brief reply for now. I am looking at the Wednesday or Thursday morning of Americade week, that's June 9th or June 10th. The choice of day will depend upon which has better weather. (You can't see or enjoy much, 5000 feet up in heavy wet clouds) We will gather at my house between 7 and 8:30 Am, departing for the ride at 8:30. We will probably be back to the Schroon Lake region by 1:30, so, much of your day stays open, As we get closer to June, (if anyone is interested) I will post final details, directions, and a Northcountry contact number, so we can all touch base Americade week. If you've attended the Americade, but haven't run these roads, you have missed the very soul of that 6 million acre parkland. I Hope that , at least a few of you good folks, might be interested. Remember, the coffee and cake are ON ME!!! Best Springtime wishes to one and all. Mike in New York
