Yea! at the end of a nice morning ride with our riding buddies (couple) he was taunting with his/her new VTX1800 @ a back road stop light! A healthy release of the clutch lever, and I felt it happen. The lever got limp like a clutch pedal does, when the motor mounts are worn on a 396 chevy. needless to say I embarrassed myself, the valk, and let this site down too boot! Never said a word but was on pins and needles for the ride home. Shifting got bindey! Hard to find neutral, wouldn't uncouple at a stop with lever pulled, in gear. After surfin this site for some mental views while oil was draining I got to work. Two hrs later here is the results! This seems to happen too much to these! Hope the new damper disc's are made better! There wasn't a hint of a problem prior and with only 9600 miles on her! PS any suggested place to get these parts B4 I click the buy button? Note the shade treee riggins!! ext to hold C-basket for 1 1/4 nut off & (puller tool) to get the C clip off the diaph side!

Looks like 3 rivets, yes? & no springs floating around and stacking up?

The binding, to me, sounds unusual without the springs stacking up. Of course I could be less sensitive to my engines inner workings.
I didn't sense a problem until the springs stacked up.

Don't ferget to soak yer new friction plates in oil for at least 4 hrs. 8 is better.

Yes sir they looked exactly like yours! The little cheezey buggers only got the first fibre disk and not to bad at that. Its on the order list with the damper disc. The rest are fine since they only have 9600 miles on em. HDL the best place to buy parts? A bit less than B bandit I C.

Check with Service Honda in Indiana. They're quick, prices usually are about the same, still have the shipping charge but with them you won't have the Sales Tax. I use them all the time, I'm in the Orlando area and no tax has saved me some $$ over the years. It about pays the shipping, and I've found they're just as fast, if not more so.

Clutch damper plate rivets failing. Has anyone found why these break? 9600 easy miles, and no conclusive reason for failure has me concerned that just replacing the part and any other damaged stuff isn't the fix!  Undecided

I'm thinking a couple of things here.

My feeling is the damper plate assembly is there to give a little softness when engaging the clutch and might be a little more easy on the drive train.   It has no real function in power transfer.

The clutch pack has a specified stack up height which needs to be observed.

It wouldn't matter if you have no damper plate in the clutch pack as long as the stack height is the same.
So you could replace the damper plate with multiplying the other plates by two until you have reached the stack up height.

Earlier Honda's as far as I can recall, never had those damper plates and they worked great.

looks like it's the year for clutch's...had this bearing making noise on the 97 this year...

changed out this plate while we where in there...looked good...just a little movement in plate ...which I was told is supposed to be there too shake loose the clutch plates...don't know for sure but replaced it anyway...

Just got the job done in time for the Leesburg bike fest! 17 days to get the parts from (HDL) 2 evenings to get it back together. I've been told by a local Honda / Valk specialist, he knows it's synthetic oil that causes this problem. I wonder!
