Joanne's father passed away last year. Her Dad left her a handgun. Here's the problem. It's in Wisconsin, and we are in Florida.

It must be shipped ffl to ffl. (Federal Firearms lic.) You will then pay for a NICs check to get it from the ffl. You may NOT transfer a handgun across state lines legally any other way.
Not 100% positive, but I believe there is no transfer from a estate to a child, if you  were there to pick it up.

Next question, whatca gettin?

Had the same situation, when my father in law passed away.  He left me three long guns (a nice Weatherby 30-30, a WWII era Remmington 12 ga. model 11 Navy issue Shotgun , and a Marlin .22 from about 1914).

FFL guys on both ends were looking to get rich, so seeing as my mother in law was going to visit us for Christmas, I purchased a 'hard case', with locks (Cabellas).  She put them in the case, locked it, gave them as 'checked' luggage (they wrapped the case in yellow tape, marked 'unloaded firearms'), and when we picked her up at the airport, I had my guns...

I thought that guys take their guns when they fly to a hunting destination, so tried it, and it worked just fine.  If a visit to WI is due in the future, give it a try.

Or, if yer coming to InZane, hook me up with the owner, and I'll pick it up and deliver in July  :cooldude:

handguns are treated differently than longarms. Best to check with a FFL you know. If it was a handgun going from me to you it must go through a FFL, period. The only thing that might be different in their case is it is an estate, parent to child.

QuoteSales Between Individuals

An individual who does not possess a federal firearms license may not sell a firearm to a resident of another state without first transferring the firearm to a dealer in the purchaser`s state. Firearms received by bequest or intestate succession are exempt from those sections of the law which forbid the transfer, sale, delivery or transportation of firearms into a state other than the transferor`s state of residence

You still cant ship it, but a road trip should be ok.

Call the NRA, or BATF

I vote for a Road Trip, but then again, who wouldn't?

I wouldn't be able to help in this situation, but obviously there are many who would be willing.

Jeff,
I know a FFL guy that would ship it for you, I think I could get him to do it for a reasonable fee. Meanwhile, check your area to see who is going to be the cheapest on that end to receive it.

Let me and Blackdog know, maybe a road trip would be in order to pick it up for you.
