I ran heavy equipment (hydro cranes) for years, and the answer to your questions is;

BECAUSE HE CAN!

I agree with Joe, that man is one heck of an operator, even though the safety provisions are built in, he still had to get it there with only inches of clearance.

That Clip is actually from a German game show in which bets are made with celebraties and if the clelbraties loose they usually do some kind of work for a good cause or donate money for a charity. It is very popular in Germany and the contestants are many times young kids that have some unusual talent and place a bet.
