John, I have a backrest on my Ultimate seat and consider it a necessity for me and my defective back.  You can get a backrest here for a stock seat:

I have a Utopia backrest. As Highcountry considers one a necessity for his bad back, I consider one a necessity period, especially if you do long distance riding.

If you are riding  and it is a must that you keep your eyes on the road, you are riding too fast.

NITRO

I highly recommend the Utopia Backrest. I had one on my Standard and now on my Interstate. It's probably the best comfort-related item I've added.
When in doubt, ride.

Hey Nitro, I think I got a backrest for my Tourer from You. If I did, it's great, except for the small tear on the side, I'll have it recovered.

Glad you like it! I know it made touring much more comfortable for me. Utopia will sell you the cover by itself if you want, but it'd probably be cheaper to have a local seat cover place do it.

I had a Utopia on my prior Interstate.  It was installed by the prior owner.  I loved the back rest, but it did make the seat pretty difficult to re-install.  The mount interfered with the plastic tab near the center of the seat fitting into it's recess.  I don't know if this is common, or a result of a not quite perfect installation.  Not a big deal, but something to be aware of.

Just follow the installation instructions carefully. I installed mine, not problem. On the hard to install the seat issue, those instructions probably weren't followed very well. Don't be afraid to make that cut, just try not to over do it, you'll be alright.
