hey why aren't we hearing from sarah about how we need to "Drill baby Drill"? After all, as McCain stated,"she knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America."

And somebody needs to remind Bobby Jindal (who better stay out of Arizona unless he wants to be stopped every thirty feet or so), remind him that "the government is not your mommy" so don't call in the feds.  The rest of us shouldn't have to bail-out the gulf coast peoples upcoming problems. That sure would smell like socialism.

It is incredibly easy to sit back and throw stones at those in the line of fire. I'm using your post as a case in point.

Perhaps you might suggest a plan with a working solution of how to solve some of these problems; being the wise and generous person that you profess to be; I'm waiting to hear your suggestions on how to cure the worlds ills!

Hmmm, we do need to "drill baby drill".....  mo oil for us is better.  That is BP...  British Petroleum with the problems in the Gulf right now.  And they will probably have to drill another "relief well" to relieve pressure on the source before they can cap the leaking one....so yea, Drill Baby Drill.  There are quite a few oil wells/rigs in the Gulf and off our shores, and from what I understand most are not owned or operated by US.... so where does that money go???    The US needs to grab control of it's own energy resources within it borders and off it's coasts and free us all from foreign oil control.

Accidents happen and because there is an oil spill now and then doesn't mean we should stop drilling.  That would be like saying... no more driving because of all the automobile accidents, Outlaw pencils because people have been stabbed with pointed pencils, outlaw motorcycles because people have been killed on them.    Obama already stated that BP is financially responsible for the clean up.... so don't get your knickers all bunched up too quickly..... let's see how it plays out before we start blaming this or that.  I'm sure Obama and his staff are already working out how this will be blamed on Bush somehow tho..... That is a misconception. You cannot be stopped due to your race. Thats profiling. And I believe it would fall under 'illegal search and seizure'. You cant be stopped for the hell of it. If you are stopped for breaking the law then they can ask for status verification. But yes it should be for everyone, any border. Isn't it strange how all you "privacy rights" crusaders suddenly don't care that the AZ police can now stop you for no reason and force you to prove citizenship or be arrested?

Either you believe in the constitution or not. You don't get to choose when or where it applies.

So in other words, you haven't actually read the bill (AZ senate bill 1070).  If you in WA and CA are so appalled by AZ wanting to enforce existing federal laws maybe you should offer to give the illegals asylum in your state.  You can start with the ones that shot the sheriffs deputy last night near Casa Grande.

Scanner, please read the bill.  You are believing the BULL that is on the news.  According to the specifics in the law, you CANNOT be stopped just for the color of your skin.  They need reasonable cause, just like any other stop.

All this BS opponents are throwing around, should be called what it is:  LIES.

Thats it tho, they (AZ or any PD) cannot stop you for no reason. As far as police around the county- Do they do it? Yes. Do I agree with it? No.
I'm for every Americans rights but some do take it to far. I've been to enough bike rallies to see it. If they want to pull you over, they will. I know at least one local cop that would love to throw me in back of his car! So I watch it when i'm in town.....

She added a revision to the bill Friday in an effort to back herself out of the hole she dug herself:

"Another change states that immigration-status questions would follow a law enforcement officer's stopping, detaining or arresting a person while enforcing another law. The earlier law had referred to a "contact" with police."

"Contact" means the cop could initiate that contact as simply as walking up to you.  Now at least they have to accuse you of loitering or breaking out your taillight as they walk up to the car.

If they truly wanted to stop illegal immigration in AZ they would enforce a mandatory jail sentence for anyone employing them.  But, as everywhere, they are really only interested in political posturing, not on driving their donors out of business.

And what's wrong with that??  Officers can now stop anyone for suspected moving violations in a vehicle and ask for driver's license, owners card and proof of insurance.  I only see this law as giving them the authority to do it to pedestrians (you know... illegals that don't have a car or license).   Grin

I've already got one... it's my Retired Military ID card (on a federal level) and my State Issued drivers license.   Now... it all depends on what information is attached to that card that I might have issue with.....

Oh I forgot... I got two Federal ID cards.... the other is my Social Security ID card....

No, they can't.  The police would have to contact someone for another reason then be able to articulate their reasonable suspicion why they believe the the individual may be an illegal alien.  Same as they have to articulate their reasonable suspicion to show probable cause for a search warrant.  Think about how many times you prove your citizenship.  Every time you produce you driver's license for check cashing, if you're paying with a credit card and the retailer requests it, etc.  And those people aren't even law enforcement officers.

As far as "Contact with Police" the officers have to justify why they made contact with you.  Not just cause they wanted to.  The AZ Legislature amended the law to try and placate the knee jerkers.  I saw the press conference where the AZ governor signed the bill into law.  She explained the circumstances leos could contact people and stated she would not stand for officers violating it, as if they're not busy enough and have the time to be stopping people randomly.  While we're at it let's not forget Federal Law requires legal immigrants to carry their Resident Alien Identification Card aka Green Card everywhere they go.  Mom carried hers till the day she passed.

We've got a whole lot of people in this country and some on this board having knee jerk reactions to a law they haven't bothered to read.  They're going on what they heard on t.v. and letting other people pull their strings and dance to their tune.  If the federal government was enforcing the law instead of pandering to special interest groups we might not be in the situation we're in now.

Scanner...  Your awesome  cooldude    I am so glad that we have a member like you among us.  I wouldn't know what to do if we didn't have our own "pot stirrer".  You have earned the title.  It is yours to lose.

You know their are some folks in the Gulf region that this will impact their professions to their lively hoods.  My heart goes out to the fishermen of the gulf they have lost mightily in this terrible consequence of drilling in the ocean.   Let's all agree, this was a possibility from the beginning of drilling.  But, we were willing to take the risk and deal with the consequences of something tragic to happen as it has.  It is terrible that we lost 11 people that were on the rig.  I am for off shore drilling and even with the risks at hand.

Scanner you are very "strong" behind a keyboard.  One could only imagine your arrogance in person.

Enjoy... I am so glad to help you out and bump this to the top again for you Scanner.  your very welcome  Roll Eyes

Flew the Gulf for 20 years, worked for all the companys.  This deal is one out of thousands.  You have no idea how many platforms are offshore from Miss, La, and Tex.  Accidents happen, but from my 20 years of experience out there, it is remarkably rare.  I spent 10 years offshore based on platforms, and have ridden out hurricanes out there.  Yes we need to do more drilling, and become more energy independent, instead of sending Billions to people that want to kill us.
