A few weeks ago I received my renewal for my insurance policy. It went from $359.00 to $499.00 a year. I thought this can't be right so I called them. They gave some BS about new rates in California being adjusted and all that. By the way I went through Progressive Direct. I deceided to call around for better rates and found a broker who said he could get me insurance for $256.00 a year. I said that's great who's it with. He said Progressive, so I told him I have that now and it was $499.00. How can he do that. He said that I am now with Progressive Direct and he would go through Progressive Drive Insurance. It's the craziest thing I have ever heard of. The same company with the same insurance just going through a broker. So a little advice to all! You might want to go through a broker the next time you need insurance. It might save you a bunch. I am pissed at myself for not doing this sooner.

$350 - $400 a Year??
I assume that includes PIP (Personal Injury Protection)?
I know PIP added about $150-200 a year for insurance on my bike, I have pretty good health insurance so I do not carry PIP on the bikes.

Do your states tack on a Catastrophic claims fee? Up here in "you hold'em, I'll rape 'em" (Michigan) there is a $132 per vehicle/per year fee in addition to the insurance costs.

Progressive covers all four of mine for $620 here in Oklahoma. Only the Valk has full coverage, everything else is a little too old.

Mine is through Southern Casualties here in Texas and it is handled by another Progressive sub. Though I have to say I will be looking for better deal come renewal time. They based the rate increase on credit report that said I did not have verifiable credit before age 25. Seeing as I am making 3 times the income I was making at 25, what can they possible do to justify going back 27 years. Am I a little pissed, you betcha!

You guys don't know how lucky you are I wish I could get my insurance for that little. The best that I can get is 499€ which is about $640 and that is for third party only (my cage costs half that fully comprehensive). I found one company doing fully comprehensive for 1800€ or $2300. If I had bought a Hardley I would be paying about 400€ fully comprehensive the same as a friend of mine. I suppose its coz they never ride them. Still I wouldn't change my Valk

I have progressive also, $180 a year. Had State Farm, they were charging me $280!
Now, as for going through a broker for your insurance, I’m glad you saw the light!! Make sure you do the same thing with your home mortgage! My wife and I had gone through a mortgage broker and saved 1.5% APR on our first house. If you call a bank on your own you have no real backing, but if a broker calls a bank, the bank thinks “more customers” lets give them a better price, so that savings gets passed down to you! Works the same with insurance.

I have Progressive Drive through a broker on my bikes. I decided to switch my cars to Progressive, so I went online to get a quote from them. I got a rate, then called my broker to give them the business. Their rate was about $20/month higher than online and couldn't match it. They were pissed that Progressive Direct was undercutting their brokers. So I still have my bike through the broker, but my cars are through Progressive Direct.

I pay $218.75 to Progressive for full coverage on 3 motorcycles, my Valk, a V65 Magna and A Suzuki DRZ400S - on & off road bike, full coverage, $0 deductible. I think it makes a big difference in what area you are in.

I pay $80 less per year for my '01 /IS than for the '00 Standard, for full coverage. LOL The I/S is a "Touring Bike", evidently that means that I ride one safer than the other?

Interesting...when I first got insurance on my Valk Standard, Progressive had a typo in my VIN. I didn't even realize it until I got the bike inspected and the mechanic pointed it out. Anyways, so I call Progressive and let them know about it and my rates went down. They said the VIN they had was for the touring bike which assumes more miles per year...while the correct VIN came up as a cruiser.

That's for sure! when I moved here from TX my rates skyrocketed for cages and bikes too.

Dave, New to VRCC but have been following boards for a number of months. New owner of '97 Tourer with 12,000 miles and great condition. Heading out to Las Vegas for a few days tomorrow with three friends who rode down from bay area. I see all these posts with quotes for "full coverage" and there is just no way to compare price without knowing the specifics of the policy. The minimum required by the state, which in CA is $15,000/$30,000 of liability coverage meaning if you cause an accident your insurer pays the other party up to $15,000 per person or $30,000 per accident. As you add other higher liability coverages price goes up. Collision covers damage to your bike or its replacement value if not repairable after an accident. You can get a lower rate by raising the deductible you pay before the coverage kicks in. Medical payments covers injuries to you or passenger regardless of fault in an accident. By adding increasing levels of medical payments, price of policy increases. If you have good personal medical insurance you don't need much of this. I personally think the most important coverage you can have is uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM). If you are in an accident with another vehicle that has no insurance or minimal coverage and suffer serious injury with medical costs, lost income, disability etc. then your own insurance takes over where theirs leaves off. Since serious accident on motorcycle can have devasting consequences I would get the most of this you can afford. Unfortunately, your personal liability coverage must be at least as much as your UM/UIM coverage so increasing this coverage (Progressive and many insurers have a $500,000 limit here) really gets your policy cost heading skyward. Many times "full"coverage" means to people the minimum liability required by the state along with minimum UM/UIM and collision coverage with a high deductible added on. Sorry to go on and on but you can see there is no way to compare costs from different insurers without knowing specifics of policies.

Ya know it's the same old thing when someone mentions their annual insurance rates.
$450.00 here, $299.00 there, oh there's $156.00.
Come on folks. How valid is that information? It's all relative to limits, additional coverage, State, Zip code and so forth.
Odds are at a buck & a half it's liability only and generally at that State's minimal limits. Someone too, may have an Umbrella policy that affects their bike rates.
Everybody's claimed rates mean squat for comparison sans listing coverage limits and/or details. Then again, that's private info and no need to post it.
Jist tinkin' out loud.
