LA approves Arizona boycott over immigration law
By CHRISTINA HOAG, AP

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles on Wednesday became the largest city yet to boycott Arizona over its tough new law targeting illegal immigration in a move that likely will affect some $8 million in contracts with the state.

The City Council voted 13-1 to bar Los Angeles from conducting business with Arizona unless the law is repealed. The vote followed an emotional council discussion during which many members noted that their ancestors were U.S. immigrants.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa already has said he would approve the boycott.

The proposal could affect investments and contracts worth as much as $52 million, including contracts for airport, harbor and trucking services, according to a report from the city's chief legislative analyst. That report recommends the council consider suspending travel, cutting contracts and refraining from making any new ones with Arizona-based companies.

But Councilwoman Janice Hahn, who co-authored the resolution, said it would be impractical to cancel most of those deals and only about $7 million to $8 million in city contracts probably would be affected.

"US Airways is based in Arizona and they certainly fly in and out (of Los Angeles)" and it would hardly be feasible to end those flights, Hahn said before the council vote.

Hahn said the Los Angeles boycott also won't affect the city's Department of Water and Power, which has wind farm and nuclear energy contracts in Arizona. Among the contracts with Arizona companies that conceivably could be terminated include those for helicopter services, Taser guns, waste management, engineering and surveillance equipment.

Hahn said "the best scenario" would be to turn around and give those contracts to California suppliers.

The resolution claims that Arizona's new law encourages racial profiling and is unconstitutional. The law, set to take effect July 29, requires police enforcing another law to question a person about his or her immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that the person is in the United States illegally and makes it a state crime to be in the country illegally. Several lawsuits seeking to block its implementation are pending in U.S. District Court in Phoenix.

Some polls have shown strong popular support for the Arizona law and critics are concerned that other states may follow up with their own versions.

Several cities across the country have passed resolutions or urged boycotts to protest the law, including California cities such as Oakland and San Diego. A nonbinding resolution approved Tuesday by San Francisco city supervisors urges a boycott of Arizona-based businesses and asks sports leagues not to hold championship games or tournaments there.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said the boycotts are unfortunate and misguided, primarily because the law mirrors a federal requirement that legal immigrants carry immigration papers.

"It's already the law in the United States, and I have a responsibility to stand up and protect the people of Arizona and we will do that," Brewer said Tuesday.

Charges that the law will lead to racial profiling are "just pure rhetoric," Brewer said.

"I find it really interesting that we have people out there that are attempting a boycott in favor of illegal actions in Arizona. That to me is just unbelievable."

Of the resolution in Los Angeles, Hahn said: "We want to stand back and say that we're against it. We're hoping that Arizona will be the last state to do this instead of just the first state to do it."

The city staged a similar economic boycott against South Africa during apartheid and against Colorado after voters in 1992 passed a state law repealing local ordinances that banned discrimination against homosexuals.

Here are some examples from U-Haul of its current one-way rental rates for a 26-foot truck:

From Dallas to San Francisco: $734
From San Francisco to Dallas: $2,116

From Houston to Los Angeles: $706
From Los Angeles to Houston: $2,051

Taken from this article:

http://blog.american.com/?p=9141

Bottom line, a LOT more people are leaving California than are going there, and the price of a one way U-Haul in to vs. out of the state reflects that fact very well...

Not only should we maybe visit Arizona, but maybe California has some things on the market that I don't need so much....

Disney
Certain fruits/vegetables/produce
Movies
Wines
etc

Look at the bright side
If the Arizona law has its desired effect, California will have an increased work force and population...albeit illegal.

21% of Los Angeles's power comes from AZ power plants. We burn the coal here and let them have it. Maybe we should stop sending them 21% of their electricity. Another side note: The Suns have to play the Lakers in the NBA finals. This should lots of fun. BTW: You guys wanna come out; there's plenty of us to show you around and have fun with. Another AZ new law: Any citizen can carry concealed without a permit. That goes into effect this summer too.

Interesting, Does that mean that LA will no longer be needing anything from the Colorado River? I'm sure Lake Havasu will be relieved!

It is one of the primary sources of drinking water for Southern California.

We took the Confederate flag off the dome of our Capitol building and placed a much
smaller one next to the Confederate Soldier monument on the State House grounds...

In appreciation, the NAACP boycotted South Carolina. A few sports related things attempted to
support the boycott, but it is basically irrelevant. Bidness is booming, BMW is building out, Boeing
has moved into the State, military tech industries are opening up, tourist destinations are packed...

AZ will be fine...

An Illinois school just stopped their girls basketball team from going to AZ for a tournament, citing it was for the girls "safety".  They said it was not because of the new law.  But later in the same statement, they talked about AZ's values and ethics.

Safety my arse.  It was all political.

I say Inzane in AZ next year!  Thanks, Joe.

Somebody had to stand up and be counted.

This is a start.

We have to control the Borders.

What Arizona will lose in outside business is a drop in the bucket compared to what they will save

on help to ILLEGALS. Billions upon Billions are spent to gvie them free everything with no return.

Porperty taxes , income tax base, social securtiy taxes and other things are just freebies to them.

I wish I had been gettin the deal they have been gettin.

Well everyone who knows me knows that I'm never short on opinions!   coolsmiley

The first thing I think everyone is missing in this whole battle is the 1st word in the new law -- ILLEGAL!  For real -- what part of that doesn't ANYONE understand?   uglystupid2

We - Arizona is NOT against hispanics.  This is nothing against Mexicans.  Damn sure is nothing against Immigrants.  Hell reality is that 95% of all Americans came from somewhere other then here.  I am Native American -- but not full blood -- there is definately german, dutch and probably a number of other nationalities flowing through my blood --- but the point is my ancestors came here and did what was necessary to BECOME AMERICANS.

They didn't band together and DEMAND that we accommodate their needs.  When was the last time you picked up something and it wasn't printed in both english and spanish?  If you have that pleasure then I envy you.  It PISSES ME OFF that every single thing in this State is in both languages -- hell half the time anymore I pick up something I have to put it down because it is ONLY SPANISH.

I woke up in the State of Arizona, in the United State of America where the CITIZENS are free and the language is English and we thank GOD for the opportunities we have.

We (Arizona) is not against immigrants.  They are what has made this country great.  What we are against is the border jumping, thieving, murdering, drug running SOB that come over here and are turning our state into a flipping war zone.

The ILLEGAL immigrants come over here --- 2 go to work and 12 sign up for our public health care; food stamps; enroll their children into our public schools ---  the 2 send the money back to MEXICO - they never pay a dime in taxes let alone the 12 that are sucking our state dry.

Everyone is all up in arms over Health Care Reform.  Ranting and raving about what it's going to cost the American Tax payer.  WAKE THE HELL UP FOLKS!!  It is already costing you!  With all of the ILLEGALS on public health care --- and those without insurance --- they don't go without medical services --- HELL NO --- they go to the doctor; emergency rooms; have thier surgeries and procedures --- with or without insurance (public or otherwise) they just don't pay the damn bills!  Now the hospital passes the debt to you and I and the insurance companies.  We are already paying for health care for the uninsured --- if you don't think you are --- then you are crazy as hell!

All Arizona is doing is ATTEMPTING to stop the FLOOD (and I mean FLOOD) of ILLEGALS coming over the border and DESTROYING our State.  If they were water instead of bodies trust me we would look just like the midwest where the floods have ravished and destroyed the homes and lives.

You want to be here --- then do it LEGALLY.  Get you damn visa --- learn our language --- pay taxes --- take your share of responsiblity for yourself ---

We need to go back to being the County of the Free --- NOT FREE HANDOUT!  Undecided

Funny you should mention that, My brother lives in AZ and works for a company that has security contracts with ICE, He use to drive a school bus but he got his LE certifications , so they hired him and he drives a bus across the border several times a week and drops them off. He says business is way up now with the new law, he has worked 12 hour days for the last few weeks doing nothing more than driving across the border and back and also to the airport. Of course it is high security, he is armed, the other gaurds are armed, he wears a vest, etc.

He also said he has now been there long enough that he sees repeats.

That may be the most ignorant, inflamitory post I have seen on this board. I truly hope you are simply trying to start an argument, The thought that you might be serious is frightening.

What's frightening is being in your back yard when some gun toting illegal comes walking through and takes a drink out of your garden hose before he sees you and runs off.  I've got friends who live along South Mountain here in Phoenix who do not go out at night for just this reason.

Folks, if you've never been accosted in your back yard then you have no clue of which you speak.  I moved here from a suburb of Chicago called Harvey because of the drug wars there.  Prior to getting my parents out of that town I counted eight bullet holes in their garage and one in their back yard swing.  Had they been sitting on that swing they would have been shot.  One of the bullets went through the garage window, through the passenger side window of my dads car and logged in his dash.  Three or four years ago about five Harvey cops and one fire fighter were arrested for selling drugs from city vehicles.  This is no joke.  It's getting serious.

So tonight when you sit in your cozy back yard with your special lady be thankful that you can do so without fear of being shot.  Here in Arizona every night we hear about someone getting killed, run over, shot, or sliced up, babies killed in random or not so randon drive by shootings and there is always at least one illegal involved.  That is what we are tired of living with.  If you want to be a liberal then I suggest you fly down here, we'll take you out to the border and you can walk along the border at night.  When they come accross with their goods you can be as liberal as you want with your own life.

In Harvey I slept with a gun under my pillow for most of my adult life there and here in AZ I am fully permitted to carry.

I am an ARIZONA NATIVE! Born and raised and still here! Our Gov. Jan Brewer has my attention and my support. As well said by Des earlier in this thread, I just don't get what people don't understand about ILLEGAL! Some of my fellow co-workers (Hispanics) are upset at this new law. They say they are going to get pulled over for no reason after they have been out partying and get DUI'S. Can you believe this statement!? First of all you should not be drinking and driving and second, you will NOT be pulled over if everything is in order on your cage or bike IE taillights brakelights turnsignals ETC....... and as long as your driving skills are in order also, no weaving going too fast ETC..... don't give them a reason in the first place. It has always been AGAINST THE LAW TO BE HERE ILLEGALLY! My state of Arizona is just doing what the Feds refuse or are not willing or don't care to do. Texas may be the next to follow suit. If Texas does there is a state in between Texas and Arizona called New Mexico, I would tend to think they would also follow suit as to NOT be the only state for illegal entry east of Calif., just my thought on that. And as soon as the law of concealed carry goes into affect, you can bet your LEGAL ARSES I wll be packing! I already carry openly now but not all the time.
INZANE 11 ARIZONA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring your firearms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe we can have a VALKYRIE RIDERS SHOOT OFF COMPETITION!!!! LMAO!! Just a thought!!!
I do thank you all that do not live here for the support, it has gotten bad in the southern part of this state and is working it's way north. We need to STOP IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for listening!
