Has anyone purchased a gas scooter? I'm looking at a few gently used scooters on craigslist for my dsughter who is at school in Austin. I think I'd rather get gas powered than electric. If I get one that's 50cc or less she wont need a mc license. Any advise? Thanks!

I think scooters are dangerous.  They are too slow to stay behind.  and too fast to be easy to pass, plus they don't have much gyro action to the wheels.

I'd rather see her get her MC license, and ride a small REAL motorcycle.  Like a 250 rebel or something.  JMO.

I'd be willing to bet a Rebel could'nt hang with the Suzuki Burgman on the highway or twisties. We've been on the super slab running 85 plus and Jack would be right with us we've also hit the curves and he's always in the pack. Jack is a great ridin' and I know that helps .

I think as long as she is just riding around campus and doesn't plan on exceeding 35 mph then just about any scooter will do. However, if she plans on riding some busy roads or any other kind of riding (out in the country, US routes or travelling between towns) tell her to get the MC license and look for something above 250cc.

Just my opinion.

+1, just realize many of the smallest chinese ones are "disposable". No parts available and/or nobody who'll touch 'em for service. The market got flooded with a zillion crappy chinese scooters, sold everywhere from ebay to used car lots & strip mall stores, with no service support. Most "real scooter" dealerships are getting their revenge by refusing to even put air in the tires much less actually work on them. If you can find one for $100-$200 that seems in good shape I'd take a chance on it and junk it if it developed anything major in the way of problems later.

I was talkin' about the 49 cc ones that'll only go 35 or 40 mph.  You know... the "Drunk-mobiles" that don't require a license.

i've got one of those crappy chineese scooters!!  when i bought it the fuel tank was filled with water and crap, after cleaning out the fuel tank and the carburator it actually runs pretty good!  my daughters have used it and they love it!  they're pretty much junk though in my opinion, if you want to buy mine i'll sell it to you for $200, that's what i paid for it before it would run.  (if i were you, i wouldn't buy it.....  Roll Eyes)  as for safety, you can get hurt just falling out of bed!!

Honda has the Metropolitan.  It's a 49cc engine, I won one a few years ago but never rode it.  I sold it to a college student, she was going to use it to get around the campus.

She just needs something to get around campus. Something she can chain to a bike rack basically. I found a Vespa but the ad showed the pretty-side. Not the side that got dumped and cracked

I would lean towards the Honda.  I think you could get a new for for under 2K and used would of course be even less. I have seen a lot of them when visiting my sons on a college campus.

I just found an almost new one for $1100. Hoping it's still available!

Sounds like a good deal.  Hope you get it.

Yamaha makes some decent small scooters, as does Kymco. Mine is a 400cc Yamaha Majesty, which I've had for 6 years, has 30K on it, has done over 90mph, and cruises comfortably at 80mph, and is very nimble. I'd stick with the brand names, most Vespas will be overpriced. Good luck!

I had a Honda something (49cc) in the early 90s I purchased used for commuting in Bloomington, IN (IU).  It was very reliable and I had no problems with it.  Bolted a milk crate on the back and had no problems hauling books, etc.

10 years ago I bought a Derbi Manhattan (49cc) for my kids.  Made is Spain and it has also been maintenance free, but it does not get ridden much.  I know that model is out of production.

The nice thing about buying a used Honda or Yamaha (or other name brand) is that you can find parts (if you need them) and also get back most of the purchase price when it comes time to sell.

I think I've narrowed it down to either the Honda Metropolitan or the Yamaha Vino. Both are 49cc and have the same look. Thanks for all of the advice! cooldude

Might as well find the original campus scooter, 100mpg, 45 mph flat out 3 speed with centrifical clutch.
I use it to run around to the grocery, post office, hardware store, etc.  Filled it up in march, still got gas.  It has less than 2000 miles on it and is 30 years old. And it's a Honda! hoser  Grin
