Fires burn in northern Michigan

Grayling -- Crews are battling two forest fires in dry, windy northern Michigan, both of which have forced the evacuation of more than 25 homes.
The state Department of Natural Resources and Environment said one fire stretching some six miles long has burned about 5,000 acres in Crawford County's South Branch Township, near the Oscoda County line. Ten structures have been destroyed.
More than 15 residences were evacuated. A Red Cross shelter was being opened at Resurrection Life Center in Grayling.
DNRE spokeswoman Mary Dettloff said the fire is mostly on federal land. None had been contained by 11 p.m. Tuesday, and crews were expected Wednesday to erect a fire line around the blaze, breaking up vegetation to help halt the spread.
The second fire is in Kalkaska County, within the Camp Grayling National Guard base.
Dettloff said 10 to 15 houses had been evacuated there. Military personnel were helping DNRE crews and volunteer firefighters fight the estimated 900-acre fire.
About half of that fire had been contained late Tuesday.
The cause of both fires is still being investigated, but both blazes were believed to have been aided Tuesday by dry conditions, gusting winds and the amount of vegetation, Dettloff said.
"It's not uncommon... because of the significant amount of jack pine in that region," she said. "It's just the prime fuel for a wildfire."
