The butt dyno, says there is.  I swear my STD will flat out EAT my Interstate.

I am even starting to think that there might be a gearing difference between them.  I am going to compare speeds, via GPS on both bikes based on engine RPM to verify it.

Maybe the IS is still a little gummy from sitting?  It idles nice, and seems smooth.  Does the additional weight make THAT much difference?

In fact, I am putting BOTH bikes on a dyno here soon too.  The next door neighbor has one at his shop that I get to use for free.  Smiley

What say you guys?

Jabba:

My STDs have never lost to a I/S.  Evil

"Eat" is a good way to put it. Mostly due to lighter weight due to lack of Tupperware. Less wind resitance from windscreen, bags, trunk, backrest, etc on a STD. There are other factors, as well, like many I/S have slow 2-tone paint.

I ran my Valk against a friend's I/S on I-10 in Mississippi.  They ran neck and neck and whoever got the jump always won.

I don't own a standard...but I have always thought that my Tourer was a bit more nimble than either of my Interstates; however that could be due to the Mark T's exhaust coupled with the slightly lighter weight.

I can even tell a small difference just between the Interstates, the one with 41K miles "seems" faster than the one with only 19K miles....other than that they are identical.  Possibly as they get broken in, there is a small difference in performance....then again maybe the difference is in my head.  I guess a dyno is the only way to know for sure!

Jabba I look forward to seeing your results.

sherry and i each have a Valk Tourer. Mine is 97....105k miles. hers is 98....23k miles. Mine has 6 degree trigger wheel....MarkT pipes, K&N filter, and has the washer "thing" done to the carbs/jets. Hers...has NOTHING ....at least...none of the above. Stock filter, stock pipes, stock trigger wheel, etc.

Mine runs a bit richer. Mine runs stronger........PERIOD. i've ridden both of them back to back and over and over. Hers runs smoother..the engine that is (perhaps due to far less miles on it?)...her shocks are much less worn and thus it rides smoother on the road too....and hers goes consistantly further on a tank of gas ...like 15-25 miles further consistantly (maybe due to some of my mods ...eating gas mileage....like the washer "thang"?). But absolutely mine runs stronger than hers....but i can tell that hers has far less miles on it....is "tighter" in the ride due to less miles...etc.

My wife's Tourer has never been beat by any other Valk it been put against. It makes my Interstate look like a Volkswagen when we run hard together.

Her bike also has 107,000 miles on it. Yes, she beats the mighty Black Pearl every time.

Bring it.

I bought both of mine used.

The std with 2765 miles.  The IS with 32,4XX miles.

Both are essentially stock, except for the Std has a Dyna 3000 ignition, on program #7, and I run 93 octane gas in it to keep it from pinging.

I sort of feel like the IS might be sluggish due to having sat so much, but it also SEEMS to idle OK, and "blips" good too.  I SHOULD probably run som Lucas or Seafoam thru it just for good measure.  I plan to get them both on the dyno sometime next week.

I believe the IS was tuned by Honda to have more mid-range and less on either end than the STD or Tourer. I also recall Cruiser Mag. saying that power on the STD deteriorated after the first couple of model years. Honda denied anything was different but Cruiser said the dyno does not lie.

Substitute Kim's for Sherry's & no trigger wheel on my Valk & this is EXACTLY the results we have at our house, right down to the mileage!

That is cool. Have we met? I appologize...we probably have...but i meet so many folks...go to so many events/rallies. We're gonna' have to ride together some day....ALL FOUR OF US. that would be too cool  cooldude

Gordon and Joe race all the time, Gordon on a Interstate and Joe on a Standard Turned Tourer.

I think Gordon always wins and Joe always claims he was not trying .

So no definitive feed back can be assumed from the races I have seen.

But it looked like up to about 80 or 90 not much Diff.

Then aerodynamics comes in at that speed but they usually quit then.

I have owned two, a Tourer 98 and a Interstate 2001 and besides the interstate riding better.

Not much diff..

The tourer only had about 2800 miles on it, almost new miles wise.

Ran good according to Smokin Joe , he rode it home for me. The tourer that is. He was amazed the carbs were not gummed up.

The interstate has 48,000 miles on it and it runs about the same rpm at 70 as the tourer so I believe

at least for my part they are geared the same.Big Al

Tim, those are our bikes. It is a bit of a strange coincidence that we have the same bikes!
I had a brain fart on Kim's bike, she does have the Cobra 6X6 pipes which do hurt the performance a bit. Plus I don't have MarkT's GP but just a set of GP's of my own making. Otherwise the similarities are striking!  Shocked

I have kept both bikes set for 2 up because when we ride to destinations we can take either bike 2 up out to eat etc.  cooldude

Friend of mine has a yellow/creme(calls it his Banana Boat) that is the fastest/quickest Valk I've ever thrown a leg over except for a blown one. There's only one mod I'd do to it if it were mine....add a backrest to keep you from sliding off the back. First time I test rode it, I idled away from the stop sign and then gave it a twist. If he hadn't warned me about it, I may well have flipped it. His only warning...if you hit it very hard, be sure you're hanging on tight. Brother....he wasn't kidding, took me a couple minutes to break the suction when I got back to the house. And with all the work done to it, he still gets in the mid-30's for mileage. Love to have it for my own.

speaking of Cobra pipes....i once rode Greenzilla...Crazyhorse's "new" green valk (when it was Robert's from Jax). WHAT A DIFFERENCE....his Cobra pipe Valk ...that had NOT been rejetted....verses mine with the MarkT's (that gain HP/torque) and the other little things i've done to mine. Anyway, BETWEEN THOSE TWO BIKES, a HUGE difference. his with the Cobra pipes and stock jetting was MUCH slower than my Valk. It was incredible how much difference there was. but you figure...he MAY have been losing 5-7 hp with his setup...and mine may have gained 7-9 hp with my setup...so there might have been 14-16 hp difference. THAT...IS....detectible........

Jabba, the difference may be the Dyna ignition on the std.  Willow may be able to comment on that since I think he has a Dyna on his bike.  One of my I/S's has a trigger wheel and Mark T's on it and I think it is stronger than my other I/S and my Tourer.  I've done a rolling start against another stock I/S and mine with the trigger wheel walked away from the stock I/s.

Every Valk is different, but you said the magic words.  Head to head, bone stock (When did you last see a bone stock Valk?)  the Interstate should pull the Standard early based on the ICM power curve.

Time creates differences.  Every Valk is different; some a lot; some a little.
