My father passed away Monday morning.  Diagnosed in Sept with cancer, nothing they could do.
Proud of my dad.  Little history.  He was born in Poland in 1927, survived Hitler invading Poland.  They took my grandfather away, never say him.  My dad and grandmother worked for a German farmer, who literally saved his life.  The Germans came to the farm and wanted to take my father away.  When the Americans came he and my grandmother were sent to a displaced persons camp.
There he met and married my mother, my brother was born thern.  From there he went to France, were I was born.  Came to American in 1955 to live his American dream, worked two jobs as long as I can remember.  Back then you had to have a sponsor and proof of work.  He and my mother have been married for 64 yrs.   He lived his American dream, he reaped the rewards of his labor.  He will be missed.

Ms Simone, I am so sorry for your loss.

I knew it was coming during my many conversations with you and Ranger while I was stateside, but it always still comes as a shock to hear that it reached a finality.

Both of your parents sound like such great people from the stories you have told.

I know how much you loved them and am so sorry to hear the news.

Words can not express adequate condolences to you.  You know that I am thinking of you and your family during this time of loss.  You have always remembered the good and expressed them many times to me and many others of a good man.

będzie żył na zawsze w pamięci

(He will live on in your memories forever)

I will call when I get back in 2 weeks.

Catfish, your father was part of the greatest generation the US has seen.  From the hardship and struggles of the great depression and WW2 they rose and built a nation.  Take pride in his accomplishments and lets try to preserve what they built.  Im just 43, but I have lost both parents.  One to cancer and one to cigarettes.  I understand the pain and sorrow you are feeling and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I too want to add my sympathies and condolences.  Your family story and mine are similar in that my parents escaped the Nazi onslaught in the 30's, lived in Paris, then Cuba, awaiting a visa to the US.  Finally happened, and then my twin brother and I were born here in the US, just as WW2 was ending.

They came with nothing and built a new and great life for us here in the USA for which I am eternally grateful to this day.  I feel your loss, and even though they have been "gone" for many years, I think of them every day.

Godspeed to your Dad......

My condolences. My father had basically the same story, was taken off his dads farm in south eastern Poland and sent to work on a farm near Leipzig Germany, worked hard but atleast he ate. After the war he made his way to southern France and worked  near Toulon as a welder making ships. Met my mother and we moved here in 61 when I was 4. Had a sponsor and they never were a burden to anbody still  to this day. They broke their butts and they made their American dream.

So sorry to hear of your loss, take comfort in the fact that your father is no longer suffering and is at peace.  He sounds like he was a good man, my father worked 3 different jobs when we were kids and raised 7 of us, so I understand the sacrifices he made to give you a good start in life.  May he rest in peace.

Catfish,

It’s amazing how many other people have similar background stories!!  My father came to America after WW2 in ’49.  he was 19, the youngest of 12.  he came here alone with only $5 and the cloths on his back.  He worked construction in Chicago for 23 years.  Retired at the age of 53 with about $750 grand.  Did better then I ever will.  Died last December 6th of lung cancer caused from smoking at the age of 77.

Kinda know where you're come'n from. Mom is native of France, born in '25. Grew up during the time Hitler occupied France in a small town not far from the WW II beachhead invasion of Normandy. She experienced some hard times at the hand of the Germans. She witnessed some "stuff" during the occupation and the liberation that she can barely talk about to this day. There is an American G.I. cemetery in her home town. She came to the USA in 1950 sponsored by an American military officer. She will soon be 86. That's my mom.

Thank you for all your kind thoughts and prayers.  It's amazing to know how many people have the same sort of story.  My dad was born in Wojcin,  district . Wielun/Poland.  It's something that we need to tell our grandkids.  The displaced persons camp was like a holding camp, waiting to see what countries would take you.  Some of the countries would only take x amount of people.  I was born in Le Celle St-Cyr France in 50, came to US in 55.  I wish my parents would  have told more stories.  My dad only started to talk about it in the last couple of years.  My mother won't talk about it at all, so I know nothing of her side of the story or family.  Lesson is to talk to your kids and grandkids about your family history.
