I will be taking a family trip in a few weeks. Anyone familiar with the area recommend any must see's. We will have the whole posssee with me from 6 years old to teenagers.
I am not familiar with the area. We were headed to Dauphin Island, but with the oil spill we decided to go east coast.

Near the Wright Bos. museum is Jockey's Ridge. A very large sand dune. May be the largest east of the Mississippi but I'm not sure of that. Currituck light house is cool if you're into lighthouses. It's just up hwy 12 a little north of Nags Head. And there are "wild" hoses in the area. We saw one near the lighthouse. There is an aquarium and an outdoor drama in Manteo. I believe the play is about the Lost Colony. Can't remember the name of the place with the super seafood buffet. It's on A1A in Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hills. I bet if you ask around in the area someone will know of it. The bridge over to Hatteras Island is pretty cool and the Cape Hatteras lighthouse aint far from the southern end of the bridge. If you have time, go to the southern end of Hatteras Island and take the ferry to Ocracoke. It's worth the effort. You can drive on stretches of the beach on Ocracoke. That trip would make for a long day if you leave from Nags Head.
That's all I can think of for now. hope you have a good trip.

Thanks for the replies. I know Grave Digger will be on one little boys to do list.

I dig old light houses and such.

I thought about trailering the Valk behind the Suburban and taking off on the BRP for a few days, but this is a Family trip, and they are growing up way too fast, better spend time with them at the beach.

If I can get up the guts I want to try parasailing
I ment to do it in Cancun, but the equipment looked pretty darn warn out, I think it would be safer state-side.

We did a family vacation down to Outer Banks a few years ago.  Wife and me took our 3 + each of them brought a friend. All were 12 - 16yrs old.  We hit the beach everyday,  weather was great at end of June.

Our most memorable part of the trip was a guided kayaking trip on Aligator River Wildlife Refuge.  You make an appt with them,  they trailer the kayaks and meet you in a parking lot on the main road and you follow them the rest of the way.  A short lesson in paddling and off you go.  Single and double kayaks.  There are aligators in the water and along the banks..  never felt in danger, most were small...  except by the time we got home,  most had grown to twice their real size to improve the stories.   The kids are older now and still talk about that trip. Recommend that highly.

Took the Valk down there a couple years ago, maybe the best week of riding ever for me...Took a plane ride over the shoreline to view the old ship wrecks off Hatteress...Way Cool!!!  Just a great place to see, glad it's in North Carolina, but of course riding thru the Smokies ain't too bad either...

Coinjock Marina restaurant. Decent prices, great food. Prime rib is good, fried or broiled seafood platter+awesome. I live nearby, this is one of my wife's favorite placs to eat. Right on the Intercoastal Canal, always nice boats pulled up in front. Her's the link.

At the beach, if you have time, take the ferry over to Ocracoke from Hatteras. nicer during the week, when the weekenders are gone. Ferry is free, a quick 20 minute run. And the drive to Hatteras is nice, away from the development above Nags Head. I ride this beach road as often as I can. Stop at the DQ on the way down, nice bead shop coffee shop next door.
