1947. Fred grew up in Oak Park, Ill. He and a buddy took Fred's '35 or '36 Ford coupe all the way to the end of 66 in CA. He said they had a blast. They were 19. I've known him since '68 and never knew this about him. He has been much more of a "Dad" to me than my father ever could have been. Carolyn and I drove down to Statesville, NC and had a nice visit with him today. Some of you may remember I drove him to St. Louis (He doesn't see well enough to drive that far) in January to attend the funeral of his son and only child. He's a good man and I am blessed to have him in my life.

that was the year I was born.  I bet they had to worry about things like running out of gas and flat tires and where to spend the night.  If he didn't already tell you, ask him about those things.  Were there motels?  They didn't have air conditioners back then I am pretty sure.
Sounds like he means a lot to you, good that he came into your life.

I did ask and he said they stayed in fleabag hotels. Said there wasn't many hotels and they were just kids so they didn't have much money. And gas stations were few and far between. And they did not stay in Tucumcari.  Smiley This came up when I was telling him about the Tucumcari trip. He used to travel a lot before he got too old. So now he travels vicariously thru me.

Did the trip last September on the Valk... Going again this year.  If you're interested in joining us check the site link (below)... We meet up in Chicago the Friday before Labor Day... Dinner at Del Rhea's (a Rte66 icon) and depart Saturday morn; 11days to Santa Monica and a lot of nostalgic stops along the way.

From 1950 till when they started building the freeway's that Dwight E. funded, I made many mnay trips on the old road.

Somewhere I have some note book sheets of a trip in like 52, where I left San Fran, to LA onto Route 66 to Joplin, MO to Des Moines for $50.00 total cost.

I'm looking for the pages and my daughter says she thinks she has them for making into a journal for me.

One of the entries was Motel, $9.00.   Was a good road back then.....

Now ain't that strange ... I was born and raised in Oak Park, IL. My dad would also take Route 66 out west in the spring to play golf in AZ and I in 1958 my parents took a 2 week car trip out west and most of that was the old US Routes.

Wow! Fred and I were evidently born in the same year as I was 19 in 1947.  Two years later, my buddy, Vic, and I rode the unfinished BRP and Shenendoah.

Tell him hello for me.

That's a lot of miles on $50.00 RJ. Shame we can't do it that cheap today. And still make the money we make today.
I was born in '52. So it was a good year both of us.  cooldude

Your Dad and Fred may have played golf together somewhere in IL Thom.

I bet that was a cool trip too Wayne. The BRP in 1949. WOW You said you rode the BRP. On Bikes ? I think about folks who rode bikes long distance back when the rear suspension was 2 small springs under the back of the seat. Must have been a rough ride. And some tuff guys to do it.
I'll tell Fred you said hello.  cooldude

i was born in '66, in '70 we drove to LA on route 66 all the way from chicago, i've riden the whole route, but veagly remember it since i was only 4 back then!!  i do remember that we were four kids in a '67 cadilac coupe deville, baby blue!!  i remeber sleeping on the floor behind my fathers seat with my head on the drive shaft hump.  we've got old movies of us kids stopping at wayside rest area's along the route, my mom looked good back then!  my father had hair!!  my brother would eat hardboiled eggs and stink up the car!!  it was a long long drive that i think every family should take once in their lives!!  me and my family have driven to LA three times now, thankfully in a bigger vehicle!  a ford windstar, were each kid has thier own seat, video games, and a 15" flat screen for watching movies!!  boy have times changed!!

Keep that web link ... it's an annual cancer fund-raiser ride.  It will be available until we find a cure for that heartless debilitating disease.  Maybe we'll see you in the future.  cooldude
