We received the following email:

This is to inform you that on July 2, 2010. Larry Kientz valkrider101 who was travelling from Fort St.John Canada was involved in a fatal accident outside of Olds,Alberta. He hit a bump losing control of his interstate while traveling east to come to this event. His wife Judith was ahead in her car and was not involved. He was well loved, respected and will be missed by many. He passed away doing what he loved most in life besides his wife and family.

So tragic.  Then, the RCMP blames it on a substandard helmet.  What about the terrible road that caused the wreck?  Why no mention about why they had not fixed the bump?

I have gone over marked bumps. Some about tear the suspension off.  Then, the next one, is less rough than normal bumps in the road.  Why was it marked?

Prayers for the family and friends.

This is very sad.  My thoughts are with the family and especially his wife who had to witness such a thing.

I agree, how stupid is it to have a major bump on a steep downhill, marked or not.

Let's dedicate this InZane to Larry.

my thoughts exactly!  and what is the difference in "canadian approved" helmet verses any other?  since we're going to canada next week, should we be concerned???  why can't they repair the road, other then just paint caution signs around it!!  this was a sensless preventable accident.  my thoughts go out to the family.

My most sincere prayers and sympathy for our fellow Valkyrie rider and his family.

As a side note, this makes me very angry (not that anger does any good at a time like this).  Most of us at one time or another have encountered a situation similar to the one Larry encountered, a road that was in need of repair to the point it posed a severe danger.  The only difference in outcome can largely be attributed to luck.

So very sad…. almost unable to find words to post. I heard of this news last night and was unable to bring myself to the board to post until now.

Praying for peace and comfort for the family of Larry. I can’t image the loss they are feeling. Sometimes it’s hard to wrap your head around such things. May God wrap his arms around them and hold them so very close at this time. Because it’s only his love that can get you thought these times.

Blessings,
Patrick and Carolyn

Appears he died of internal injuries, why the fuss over the helmet ???

Alph, to answer your question, in Alberta (and I assume across Canada), an "approved" helmet is one that is certified at the time of manufacture to meet the street motorcycle helmet standards of either the US DOT, the Snell Memorial Foundation, the CSA (Canadian Standards Association), or the BSI (British Standards Institute).  In my opinion, any road maintenance provider that judges a bump bad enough to mark with a warning sign should be obligated to fix the bump within four weeks of the bump being reported or marked, provided weather allows.

Here's the Google Street View photo of what I figure to be the bump that killed Larry.  I don't know if it has gotten worse since the photo was taken.
