yes

How about a ride up the west side of the lake  over to route 2 across the Upper Penninsula and down across the bridge ?

but I am from NY so what the heck do I know about scenery in chicago

I drove thru there last saturday on 90 going east  used the express lanes and only had a 10 minute jam under some buildings, you probably would know where the place was

for my money pigeon forge had way worse traffic

Not from CHicago but .... get east of Gary on the fast-lanes then ....

ck mapquest or gmaps for details ... take plenty of time getting to Bellaire. My opinion ... what you'll see on this trip getting there will trump what you'll see there. Just my opinion living in MI all my life.

take 12 ...  red arrow hwy ... 63 (opt A2) ... blue star hwy;
around Holland start 31 N
(take advantage of the BUS RTEs through Holland Grand Haven Pentwater Ludington etc; most of those coastal towns are worth the time to roll through). Sleeping Bear Dunes is worth a drift through.
If you have time ... DON'T miss the M22 loop around the Leelenau Penninsula; stop in Leeland / Fishtown for sure.  M22 will loop the Pennisula and drop you back on M31 through Traverse City.
M31 will get you in the vicinity... mapquest will help get you to Bellaire.  Don't miss 119's tunnel of trees while your there.

The westside of the mitten is some of the most beautiful scenery will see, especially if you love dunes and beaches.
Hope this helps, B

well, me, MP, and Nitrojunkie are taking the "over superiour" route.....  if i were you, i'd go along the western part of the lake, up through the UP of michigan, to Macinaw, cross the bridge, down to bellaire......  just what i would do....  then on your way home go south, that way you won't miss anything!! you can write "circle lake michigan" off your list of things to do!! only four more lakes to do then!!

i don't know if the cherries are done for the year, but i do know it's too early for the peaches !!

Brian's route suggestions are good advice as are alph's. And the Cherry Festival in Traverse City is happening this week. I'm betting you'll be able to buy them fresh at roadside stands for another week or two. They're WONDErful!! and it's very easy to just keep gobbling them...but you might want to pace yourself. 60 miles West of Chicago!

I'm due west of Chicago (Warrenville, IL.) and I avoid the 80/90/94 junction at the south end of the lake at all costs. I think the only time that traffic is manageable is around 4:00am.

Having said that I'm will be headed south to Braidwood & Kankakee to US24, then east on US24 to Peru, IN where I meet Chopsaw & Hoosier Daddy. From there it will be on to Bellaire. You are more then welcome to join us.

Otherwise, if you have the time, do like Oss suggested and go around Lake Michigan.aire. Should be a 2 day ride unless you want to push it. Some friends and I would go around the lake every year in mid to late September. The only issue I have experienced with that route is getting around Milwaukee.

Good luck & hope to see you at InZane.

There is a beautiful stretch of road that runs from North Muskegon to Ludington.  I believe it is part of the Lake Michigan Loop.  You wouldn't regret doing that road if you have time.
