well, on the way to Inzane Michigan, my transmission went...3/4/5th gears are not meshing properly - the sound is horrible...l limped home in 3rd gear, going about 35/45 mph, going down hills l had to turn the throttle right down to avoid the painful noise, even doing so sounded bad but it was better than hearing it all the way down the grades...thankfully it was only an hour or so back... Cry

Initial advice rec'd is to replace both engine and transmission, same amount of effort?

Have been offered a '99 wing engine/transmission unit, with 25,000 miles for $500.00 - removed from frame

My '98 Valk Tourer has 152,000 kms and otherwise has been great - and l treat her with respect > no abuse.

ANY AND ALL ADVICE APPRECIATED.

Check your u-joint! Hollywood, the wheelie king, had similar trouble. He could not get into 5th gear and made a clatter. Was all ready to replace tranny when he pulled the rear end and the u joint was disinergrated.
Check the simple stuff 1st. Never heard of a tranny going bad at that milage. Bet ya a PBR its a u-joint. You maybe on the road in 2 hours! Let us know what you find.

I'll have to agree with the Fudge man. I've not heard of a tranny failure but lots of Ujoint go out.

I just can't understand how it rides at all with the gears "not quite meshing"

Check the Ujoint. You can pull it without pulling the swingarm in case you don't know that.go to shoptalk and read there I think.

Just another "ME TOO!" but I had a similar occurrence, same symptoms, I thought I'd blown something serious, turned out it was the U-Joint that'd gone out on me... STRANGE things and HORRIBLE sounds happen when that goes... It's at least worth a look see before ya' do something drastic...

Just thinkin that your Harley guy might not be the best source of Valk info out there. Try posting this on the tech side. Many wrench turner types will be more than willing to help.

I'd say it is a U joint......

Does this Harley guy do most of your work on the bike?

Do you trust him to be read to and told how to do something?

If so, go to shop talk and print off the U joint repair bulletin...

Ask the mechanic if he can understand.....

The 4 bolts referred to are the ones that hold the rear end to the driveshaft housing, right in front of the pumkin.

Hardest park on a U joint is the damn rubber boot, getting it back in place.

I agree with the guys above.  Check everything else first.  Changing out the motor and tranny sounds a tad severe.  I know that Scott rebuilt his transmission once (so he may be able to help).  You said that you are not hard on it, so a Valkyrie shouldn't blow a transmission that quick.  DDT has over 300,000 miles on his and has never changed out anything in front of the u-joint.  May just be a u-joint or something.  If it's the rear end, you can get some good deals out there from people who have triked the Valkyrie.

Post on the tech board and maybe folks can help.

My rear end runs dry a lot, so I have had to change bushings and the rear star.  It may be something as easy to fix as a rear bearing.  I have had two go out on me and the noise sounds like it is coming from the transmission area with a full face helmet on and the noise was horrible.

Good luck bro.  Sure hope you don't have to have a major rebuild - it doesn't sound like you will.

could be the splines in the differential, or I remember one or two cases of output shaft bearings going bad.  Get someone that knows shaft drive bikes to help.

The gears in your Valk are constant mesh, they are always engaged, When you shift the gears don't move. I doubt that your trouble is in your transmission. the only thing I've ever seen go bad in a Valk transmission is a worn fork, it rattled all the time.

No way it's the tranny! You could severly abuse that thing and get better life out of it. U-joint's my bet.

I had previously posted (having broken down on the way to Inzane 10) & got lots of advice saying it probably wasn't my tranny, but that it was likely rear end stuff/u-joint....well, all you advisers were correct ! it was the joint yoke/joint pinion/shaft propeller/2 seals/ring stopper to be exact...my local guys advice to change transmission/engine was way off base...a 'real' honda shop was the way to go (Bill's Cycle in Steinbach MB - and George the mechanic was a fellow Valk rider to boot!)..so thanks a whole lot you guys - you kept me on the right path - very very nice to be on the road again - just sorry l missed the rally...
