Author Topic: Help! I think I ruined my new iso grip  (Read 1998 times)

I just attempted to install the throttle side iso grip using Gorilla glue. I made it to about 3/8" of an inch from the housing and it locked up solid and I cannot get it on the rest of the way.
Now what? If I have to trash it, would I just start hacking away at the inserts with a razor blade or something? I do not want to ruin the metal cages.  I think I just ruined my day.
Thanks for any advice, Eric

Yup, they're stuck for good.

Try using them that way.

Depends on how much you put on....You should be able to pull the inserts enough possibly to even remove the grip without damaging them, I've done it a number of times.  Start at the end closes the end cap, pull slowly but not straight up, move from one to the next with tearing it out completely.

With Gorilla Glue?

This is why I use RTV silicone sealant for grips, and not glue.  You can take 15-25 minutes to get the grips where you want them (you don't need that long, but you need more than 2 seconds).  And they can be taken off when you want.  RTV does tend to come loose at the throttle every two years or so, but is easy to reseal.

Or hairspray.

To try and get them loose, remove the endcap and work an icepick down inside with various solvents sprayed down next to the icepick (WD40, brake cleaner, acetone (watch the paint).  Do 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, and the grip should come off).

I don't believe that Kuryakyn sells the rubber inserts separately, so thying not to ruin the metal will serve little or no purpose if you trash the rubber.

I would remove the throttle grip and  sleeve and work at it on the benchtop rather than on the bike.  If you break the throttle sleeve, then you will have a big additional cost.

Hairspray isn't a good choice.

I tried it and during a long ride in the rain the grip came loose and holding the throttle steady was a pain in the ass.

I put mine on with golf club grip tape.  It works great.  7 years and NO issues at all.  The LEFT one is starting to move a little.  Over a month or more, it'll move 3/8" and I tighten it back up.  NBD.

Thanks for the help. I have given up on getting it off. It looks like a couple of the inserts are torn now, so I guess I really screwed this one up. Not to mention wasting the money on more grips if they do not sell the inserts alone. Sometimes I really piss myself off at myself. Dammit!

I bought new Kurry grips....not ISO, they were the flames......but they came with two little tubes of grip glue that worked perfectly.......I had a few more seconds than I needed to get them right and then it was stuck and they are solid.  BUT, Im sure I can get them off if I really needed to because the left over glue as it dried seemed like RTV only thinner and a tad stronger........just curious as to why you went to the gorrilla glue......

Hey, just leave it and install a throttle lock in the gap. I've got one , it needed a gap to go on... think its a vista cruise, but made for older wings, had to ream it out a bit, but I've had one just like it on all of my bikes for the last 20 years. Its black plastic and adjustable with a screw fitting..... heres a link

http://www.casporttouring.com/cst/motorcycles/Vista-Cruise.html

It's made for 7/8 bars, but just take a Dremel and widen it out a bit(carefully...  can be put on without removing the grips. Like i said, I've had these on several bikes and they work.... and they blend right in, unlike the regular vista cruise that has all that extra linkage, and they are alot cheaper than any other option.

Chris, I went with some of the other recommendations here for Goriila glue when I did a search. I also read repeatedly that the supplied glue was junk. And now you say that it worked great for you.
I guess I don't know what to believe sometimes when I read through the postings. Everyone has their own opinion.
If I get another set of grips, I'll try to sell the left one. Maybe someone will need just one and I can get half my money back, hopefully.
Take care, Eric

If the glue is like Crazy Glue (cyano) then acetone is the solvent. I was able to safely remove my
Iso grips in order to install a throttle lock. Protect the Valk from being dripped on just in case (I used a paper sleeve under the grip) and work it into the grip. Be patient, twisting as you apply the acetone. If it is a cyano glue, it will work.

I think I can explain the variance in opinion and or experience.  Molded rubber has a lubricant to help it release from the mold it was formed in.  Usually there is a film of that mold release lubricant on the rubber that needs to be cleaned with something like rubbing alcholol.  Also chrome is very smooth.  I now always scuff the chrome with some emory (wet dry) sandpaper and then wipe it with the alcohol too.

If this isint done the likely result is, the grips will break loose in 2 or 3 days of riding.  Then some people (me included with the previous grips) get wild ideas of epoxy, gorrilla glue........anything strong enough to "bite" through the mold release and stick to shiney chrome.........it works, it holds, proof comes when you try to remove it........

I bought grip adhesive from the local Honda shop. $2.67. Cleaned the bars as per instructions, works great. Been holding for 8 months now.  Gorilla Glue? Doesn't that crap expand before it cures? I use it for some cabinet work, but never thought to put it on my Valk. Sometimes the fix is right there, under the glass, in the cabinet at the  bike shop.   uglystupid2

I have a spare right side ISO grip if needed, just replaced both mine as the left was damaged last month, if you need it let me know.

Grumpy, Thankyou very much for your offer. I wish I would have seen it sooner because I have already ordered a new right side grip from Kuryakyn for $37.50.
I am always impressed with the way total strangers are so willing to help each other out like you were to me, just because we share a like interest in the Valkyrie.
