Well apparently someone thought that installing high altitude cold weather spark plugs would fix the issue. Cause that is exactly what they did.
This was on the 1999 IS I got last week. When I buy a used bike I go completely thru it to locate issues, missing items, adjusted or modified parts, etc.
Wanted to chemically clean the carbs in place. The carbs would not drain, dirt daubers had built a nest at the top of the single drain hose(after the 6 into 1 manifold) and completely stopped it up.
The bike seemed to be running rich, but when I checked the spark plugs they did not show rich and were the wrong heat range. Decided to pull the carbs, when I opened the air cleaner the filter was almost completely stopped up.
Carbs were dirty and needed cleaning, the gas tank inside looks like new, dirt seems to be dried caked gas residue. Used Berrymans to clean the bowls and jets, worked as well as Gumout or Techron and better than Seafoam.
So even though the IS had 19,250 miles it has been sitting to long and to often.
It always pays to go over a used bike closely. Found a good size dirt dauber nest on the back side of the radiator.
Other items found, missing washers, spacers, leavers on handle bars needed cleaning and especially lubricating, and a few loose nuts.
Hoses, tires and cables were all in remarkably good shape(like new).
Hope to have everything completed this weekend so I can ride it.
