Somewhere we have read that late in his life Wayne said "The Searchers" was HIS all time favorite (or perhaps it was that his character "Ethan" in that movie was his all time favorite character).  "The Searchers" is a bit dark, but it is good.  We also like "The Sands of Iwo Jima" in which Wayne whipped up on the Nips; and "The Quiet Man" with O'hara.  Our all time favorite is "The Alamo," in which Mr. Wayne shows Santa Anna and his Mexican army a thing or two.

Has anyone seen the new True Grit movie.  I have not been able to bring myself to go see it.  My feeling is how can you redo a John Wayne movie and make it any better?  YOU CANT

What made True Grit for me was the way the actors used a very stylised form of speech. The trailers for the remake don't seem to convey the same feeling.

I know I am going to get flamed for this...but I was never much of a John Wayne fan.  I didn't dislike him either, and I did enjoy most of the movies he was in.  Now for the true sacrilege, one of the funniest scenes I ever saw was in "The Birdcage" when one of the gay characters imitated the way "The Duke" walked......

I haven't seen it, but I probably will... as I hear, it was not made as a remake of the John Wayne movie,
rather, it sticks more to the original book than the movie did, and is about, and from the perspective of,
the young girl.  Plus, I like Jeff Bridges and Matt Daemon movies...

Jim, Jim, Jim.  Words cannot express.

I like a lot of John Wayne movies, although I believe his real acting ability didn't blossom until he neared the end of his life.

Some of my favorites were The Quiet Man, Shepherd of the Hills, In Harms Way, and The Shootist.

When I first saw the trailer for it, I thought Bridges was playing John Wayne playing Rooster Cogburn.  Seriously doubt I'll see it till it comes on tv and then it's iffy.

I really loved the Shootist. I never thought he was a great actor, he just FILLED the screen with character. He was great and left an impression with the Shootist.

I think Jeff Bridges will do just fine bringing Rooster Cogburn back to the screen, I am seriously looking forward to seeing this one. My girls are all having a big laugh at me, getting all excited over a new western...  cooldude

Mine is The Quiet Man.  I especially love where the woman hands him a stick and says here's a stick to beat the lovely lady with.  I almost fall out of my chair laughing every time.  If I didn't have to go help a buddy wrench on his Valk, I would have stayed in my recliner watching John Wayne Day on AMC last weekend.

Marty

Mine is the QUIET MAN also.....my favorite part is during the fight on the street and it spills into the bar scene and they stop to have a beer.....hahaha

X-RING, Thats the favorite line for the wife and I. "Here's n a nice stick to beat the pretty lady with"
I went out and found a nice stick and smoothed it all out and varnished it.
SHE hung it over the bedroom door. Am I lucky or what?
The other favorite line is "No matter who's fault it is".
I met John Wayne in Newport harbor around 1972. We were swimming and noticed his boat. We swam up to it and were hanging on the back when the sun blotted out and a booming voice said," You little f#&*%@! get away from my boat". We did.
Loved him all the more. It became a catch phrase for us kids.
John and Maureen. Great team. Any movie with those two.

My brother graduated high school in 1966 and on prom night he and his date and their friends were all dressed up for prom and they went out to eat at a uppity chinese place on the South Side of Houston and in walked John Wayne and his crew.  They were in Houston making a movie.   John Wayne saw them in their tuxes and prom dresses and came over to their table and sat down and talked a while with them.   My brother said John Wayne was just as great in person as he was on screen.   Really made for a great prom night.

I agree with all about John Wayne. There were so many movies I never seen a bad one. I do agree with the comment he got better with age.  For me no question ( The Shootest ) is my favorite! And also incuding Jim Stewart as his normal true to heart person.  Could be wrong but I also want to think that is the only movie he died in?

Does anyone remember the John Wayne cread in The Shootest?

I was talking to my boys about this thread at dinner.  I said that I thought the shootest was the only movie I could remember he died in.  My 11 year old said dad, your a John Wayne fan you should know he died in The Cowboys and one of his war movies.  I guess he does pay attention after all.

Well I got on my horse, bit the bullet, bellied up to the bar and handed over some silver dollars to watch the latest iteration of True Grit.

The "Dude" channeled "The Duke" pretty well.

I'd give it 1 1/2 thumbs up.

Has anyone seen the new True Grit movie.  I have not been able to bring myself to go see it.  My feeling is how can you redo a John Wayne movie and make it any better?  YOU CANT

 cooldude

What made True Grit for me was the way the actors used a very stylised form of speech. The trailers for the remake don't seem to convey the same feeling.

Went and saw it last night. Here is my take on it:

Much of the dialogue was the same as the Wayne version (word for word in some parts). The story was different in some places, Lebouf lives, he gets shot in the shoulder at the dugout, etc. The ending sucks, I won't say why so I don't ruin it for those who are going to see it.

Jeff Bridges was very good as Rooster Cogburn, Different from Wayne but very good. Matt Damon was also good, better than Campbell. The girl who played Mattie was OK.

Best Cowboy movie I have seen made in the past few years. I did come home and watch my copy of the original, like the original better but thought the new one was worth the $. I don't think that of many movies any more. Actually I kind of refuse to go to the movies because of the price unless something catches my eye.

Hard to pick a favorite JW movie, True Grit is right up there for me.
