Click in Steering

For about the last 1000 miles or so, I have a had a sharp click in the steering stem area (or so it sounded) and just finally got around to seriously looking for it this morning.  Only hear the click when turning the handlebars slowly from stop to stop and only in a right hand direction. Just out of curiosity I reached down to feel the steering stem to see if any vibration could be felt and danged if the steering stem nut didn't wobble when I touched it.....it was loose as a goose!  Tightened to 74 lbs and click is gone and lock to lock is smooth and normal..  I couldn't hear or feel the click with the bike on a jack and no weight on the fork, of course there was no slack in the stem bearings since the lock nut still had that clearance set and not changed......moral of this story.....TIGHTEN YOUR NUT!!

I just replaced my steering stem bearings... when I got to the adjustment-nut/lock-nut combo, the lock washer was there,
the tabs were folded, but the lock nut wasn't tight against the adjustment nut...

Its interesting the adjustment nut had not vibrated loose and caused slop in the bearing clearance which should be noticed as looseness in the head set.
