I've started to rebuild the pumpkin, which I bought with worn out drive splines.

Having to pattern the tooth mesh between the pinion and the ring it's normal to have to adjust the mesh when replacing the ring and pinion gears.

The confusion is with the Honda manual and information within regarding the ring gear spacer and the pinion gear shim.

The information is incomplete and some assumptions have to be made when comparing it to the fische from HDL since they do not agree with the nomenclature nor the identification of both the shim and the spacer.

I ordered the spacer and shim from the local dealer since they come with no shipping charge even though I'm paying full list. The total for the two came to $17.12

So far the most difficult part was getting the bearing off the pinion gear shaft. I used my drill press as an arbor press for this operation.

I have yet to remove the double bearing that's in the large side of the case and carries the ring gear but I know before buttoning up the rear end, the oil seal below will need replacing.

No real surprises yet and it's pretty much what I have expected so far!

Ricky-D, I wish you luck on this.   Reading the rear drive portion of the manual, there are lots of alignment issues to be concerned with.

If you can sucessully rebuild a rear drive, a lot of us will breath easier about the longevity of these bikes.

I installed the new shim and spacer on the ring and pinion gears and ran another pattern check.

It was perfect!

Just about ready to button things up but before I do that. I have to install some stop pin shims to get the correct clearance between the pin and the ring gear.  Just ordered them a moment ago.

Probably get the shims next week so I'm shut down 'til then.

Still haven't installed any 'O' rings or oil seals. I'll wait for the final assembly to do that!

Sounds great.  I'm looking forward to the final results.

What do you figure its cost you?  I'd be interested what you had in to it when you're all done.

If you reuse your bearings it will cost you around $450.00 dollars. That's including the adapter for the wheel.

Rio Wil, yep!  Both patterns were terrific. Full tooth contact centered and large. The testing I've done with it trial assembled also has good preload characteristics.  It turns very smooth with absolutely no play between the gear teeth.

Donald
, I haven't taken any pictures because I feel the parts fische and the manual that Dag offers is enough. However that doesn't preclude me from taking some; and if and when I do, I will surely post them. Especially so if there is something that would be of help to others.

RP, I haven't got any figures together but I have saved all my cost tickets and stuff. I bought a drive shaft coupler and a new drive shaft also. There is a back order on the u-joint. I figure to replace the whole drive train with the new gears and that also includes the drive flange at the wheel. Additionally the shim cost is still tolerable and I got lucky that I didn't have to buy a bunch that wouldn't work properly.

One thing I want to say is that the rear cover came off easily with two large screwdriver in the slots that hold the plastic collar on the pumpkin.  Twist them and it moved apart easily. That was my first greatest worry and was no problem at all!

The stop shims should be in next week early so I can continue on.  One thing that helps is that I have plenty of time to do this since it is with an extra pumpkin that I bought.  Once the new one tests out, I'll probably sell my original pumpkin so some other rider can do the same as I.
