Was looking for deals on the net, but then remembered that the dealers charge an extra fee to install something that you didn't buy from them....in addition to their installation fee.

There's a dealer here who hit me up fpr 3 charges for installing one tire.  I needed it done to pass inspection and I already had a tire at home and was leaving the next day so I let him do it.  Charged me for removal of the wheel, installing the tire on the wheel, then the fee for not buying the tire from him, which he didn't have in stock anyway.  I was pissed when he started ringing these charges up as two of them were unexpected.  Too bad really as the techs were nice guys, but I don't plan on giving hm any more of my business.

Unfortunately, that is common though Gary.  I did the same thing.  Ordered tires from HDL at a great price and then broke about even after the add ons from the dealer that put them on for me (and I even removed bags, etc before bringing the bike in - that was an additional fee if you left them on).  There was only ONE dealer here (out of 3) that would even put on a tire that you didn't buy from them.  They gave me a price (including the additional fee for not buying the tire from them) and didn't tell me about the additional ones until I pulled out the card to pay for the installation.  Even charged me a disposal fee even though I took the tire they took off back home as an emergency tire.

I think most dealers are going to hit you with the fees no matter what.  tickedoff

Wow... I guess I've lucked out and found a good one, that values repeat business higher than making a quick buck!

They mount tires I bring in, even dark side, without complaining or charging more for it...

I have a couple places.

I take them the wheel and they mount the tire.

Last time I had a front mounted... it was $25, but they hit me for $1.50 in "Shop Supplies".  The other place I take them to charges $32.50 (1/2 hour) but doesn't nickle and dime me, and they'll do NMST's without complaint.

It's too easy to pull the wheels off.  Even witht he bags and everything.  I don't drop the exhausts either.

Gary

I am pretty sure it was the place that is now on Rt 9 that hit you for the charge.

The only suggestion I can give you is drive down to Joe's and he will mount it for you if you wear your rebel hat

No down side you get to ride Tennessee and North Carolina 2funny

Have you tried Kim's over on McLean Ave in Yonkers?  this is his # (914) 237-7737

I bought my arai helmet from him and at that time 8 yrs ago he was reasonable prices

What tires you thinking about this time for your bike?

I'll give Kim a call.  I like the Metzeler ME880's.  I have no complaints and get average milage out of them (compared to what others have posted here).  Still contemplating a CT for the rear, though.  We'll see.  Right now it's the front that is at the wear marks.

Man I am glad I have the Dealer I have, he matches any other prices and did not charge anything extra for disposal etc. I just had new rubbers soled on my Valk a few months ago, and Shenandoah Honda is the palce here in Winchester to go to. Always friendly and the price match is way cool.

Finding the right place thru word of mouth is the way to go.

However, I have in the past found the best prices for tires I can find anywhere, including shipping, gotten proof in writing (copies) and gone to the dealer or installer and showed him the paper and asked him if he can match or come close.  They almost never can.  However, sometimes this makes him feel better about you buying from someone else.... at least you first gave him a chance to get your business for the tires.  I have paid a bit more for install when not buying tires from him, but if the quote is a lot more, I tell him to urinate up a rope and go elsewhere.  The truth is, no dealer can even come close to the prices we can get on the internet (like Jake Wilson).

Currently my Honda dealer does not charge one penny more if you bring your own tires in.  Reason...... the lead tech (my personal friend) explained to management that they lost a lot of business; not only tire changes but all the work that is discovered at tire changes.   This was a pet peeve with many bike owners, and now this dealer gets all the tire changes in the area, and keeps a whole passel of techs busy all season long.

I just had the same tire installed last weekend.  A honda dealer in Middletown, NY gives 25% off of tire if he installs it.  I thought the price was very reasonable. http://www.mavrixmotorsports.com/default.asp

I have NEVER paid to have a motorcycle tire mounted. when you are poor and desperate you are forced to learn new skills  laugh   Now I just make sure I have friends in the right places and always try to be the one owed a favor of some sort. Being fat and lazy develops them skilz !   Cheesy

I was negotiating a tire here recently, and the dealer told me his COST on a front Metzeler 880 for the Valk was $200.  I was buying it thru Jake Wilson for $153.  I simply asked why THEY didn't buy THIERS thru Jake Wilson.  Mark it up 15% and charge a REASONABLE installation fee, and they'd actually get my business.

But... NOPE.  So I bought it thru the internet, and took it to a Susuki shop to install for me.

Exactly my experience, repeatedly.  Cost to the dealer is like MSRP.  It may be that dealers are constrained in their franchise contracts in how they may obtain parts, but poor business practice for sure.

My Metz 200 rear tire is down to the ware bars in one place so I am going to replace it soon. I already got the replacements. I got Avon Cobra's this time (I hope they are better than the Venoms). Anyhow I checked with my local Harley dealer. I know the guys real well there. A good friend from High School is the service manager. I talked to the parts guy Chris and he matched Directline's price on both tires. I thougt that was a good deal. I will mount and balance them myself.....

I have limited skills and a bad back but I mount them myself.  I only give a dealer my business when I have no other choice.
