I was going to back the videos up over several older smaller drives and connected an external usb drive adapter and something let the magic smoke out.  Either the switched power supply blew the drive or the drive blew the power supply but both are toast  Cry.

There were some really good helmet cam videos on there, crossing the mac with two views (from the wheel and helmet), the parade of bikes to Bellaire, some rodeo video (some are probably happy that's gone), tunnel of trees etc, etc.  All said, there's more than 100GB gone.

Only option is to ride some more and make new ones  Wink. Maybe back up a little more often too.

I've used the "Geek Squad" at Best Buy a couple of times on toasted drives.   They recovered 100% on one drive and 99% of the second one.   Might give them a shot.    What they recover is burned on a CD.

Thanks for the tip RJ but the logic and motor are smoked.  That is literal, the drive smells of burnt electronics.  The only way to get the data would be to pull  the circuit off a same size drive and see if the platters haven't been damaged.

They only use the platter to recover stuff, they could care less about your drive....

They attempt to use the drive, if that fails, apart it comes to the platter.   They have one 4377 of a lot of equipment at the store I use.   Don't know if all stores are like that on equipment.

Good Luck.

Just like RJ said the platters are what hold the info not any electronics that fried so as long as the platters are intact your info should still be there ..

I had a drive crash earlier this year and found a place to recover the electronics and data.  You can try the Best Buy route.

For Datacent, you can fill in a web form and they provide a quote. In my case, it sounded simple, but with further inspection, they had to match the electronics (like you surmised in your message).  They stood by their initial quote.  It ain't cheap, but if your data and photos are worth it to you, it's worth checking.

These guys did well by me and I have no relationship with them other than they recovered my data:
