Well, Willow and Oz, ...  Sorry, but those kind of people are not part of my "family spirit" and deserve all the disrespect that can be gathered for them.

I've enjoyed some of the debate, and can't deny there is definitely a cast of characters who post here.

I'm not wishing to unnecessarily elongate the discussion, but it's possible that your perception is slanted.  I can remember when G.W. Bush was President and it seemed like a large majority of the political posters were attacking the administration with almost none in support.  Now the pendulum seems to have swung to the other side although there still seems to be more attack than defend.  Maybe it's just the nature of people who post to be more vocal when they are against the current perceived power.  Maybe not.

There is certainly no shortage of inanity posted on either side of the spectrum.  That applies to both today and to five years ago.

I believe one of the secrets to a good quality public discussion is the practice of showing respect to people simply because they're people and not because they deserve it based on their opinions, intellect, or linguistic skills.

I for one have, as I know my colleagues have, attempted to use the moderator's authority based entirely upon how an idea is expressed and not upon the quality of the idea.  That's difficult because quite honestly there are a lot of posts that I would have popped in a heartbeat based upon my perception of the value of the communication.

Over the past couple of years I've sworn off some practices.  I'd like to say I've been 100% faithful to my oath, but it wouldn't be true.  Some of those practices are reacting to my perceived need to correct everyone who is obviously wrong; participating at all in political arguments; believing people are intellectually flawed based on their holding opinions or viewpoints diametrically opposed to my own well informed understanding of the truth; expressing my views regarding the inequality of the genders; using all the language that passes through my mind; and speaking to others with the level of respect that they have so obviously earned.  Two of those items have been quite difficult for me.

I've tried to post less often.  I've tried to just leave some discussions alone because I think those who can discern good logic will do so and those who can't simply can't.  I've tried to insert humor more often than my own brand of insight.  I've tried to remember how good some people have been to me, people who see the world very differently than do I.  I've tried to not pass gas in public more than thrice per day.  I've tried to conduct myself as if I were truly in fear of being perceived as arrogant and conceited.

Scanner, I for one would like to see you stay around and contribute to the VRCC community while trying out my system for as long as you can stand it.

We actually have 1,344 different members who have signed on to the message boards during the past week.  We probably have that many more who simply have read the board without signing on.  You and I are looking at the posts of a couple of dozen people at the most to get our feel for the pulse of the community.  It's likely a flawed sampling.

Give it a try, my friend.  You have a lot to contribute.  Among your possible accomplishments here is not changing anyone's mind with a single well thought out argument.  Influencing others with whom you've built positive relationships is a very real possibility.

For those of you who seem to take delight in "stirring the pot' or posting your rants on political, religious, or otherwise controversial issues, what I've said to Scanner applies to us all.  There are a lot of us who could put some serious effort into learning how to conduct ourselves in a productive and respectful manner.

are you rubbing your hands in anticipation of such a hate filled act?

do you really want someone on the extreme right to do this?

are you really that sick? sorry I take it back, I don't mean to have that interpreted as a personal attack. let me rephrase, are you off your meds?

isn't it bad enough that we have a so called pastor in FL threatening to burn the koran?

scanner I think you might have a deep seated need for persecution, do you feel better when the entire board is telling you off? i wonder,.....

There's only 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary and those who don't.

In binary, the decimal number 2 is represented by the binary number 10...  (1 in binary is 1, 2 in binary is 10, 3 in binary is 11, 4 in binary would be written 100 and so on...)

I ordered two of the clocks....one for my son-in-law and one for myself. My SIL has his own computer business, was formerly with IBM a number of years as some type of sytems engineer...not really sure what he did. A few years back they had a large downsizing and offered him a buyout of sorts, which he took and started his own business.  We pass jokes back and forth, we're the only ones in the family that understand most of them and it's kinda fun. He'll get a kick out of the binary clock, my wife will continue to think I'm demented however.  Grin
