My brother just bought a '97 Tourer that is in pristeen condition. Owner has all records for maint. and apparently was even more picky about it than I am. Problem is that sometimes when he starts it the starter stays ingaged. He can kill it and restart it and it is o k. Any ideas on the problems? Thanks for any help. Phil

I would suggest to first check the start button for sticking, the starter drive train has a oneway roller clutch that would be the only part that could hang other than the starter motor continuing to turn because itis still energized.  The roller clutch is located on the main shaft of the motor, behind the clutch.  I believe any bike with a meticulous owner would be unlikely to have a problem there, but the button or cylenoid would be more likely to be effected by moisture and time.

First do the started button maintenance. If the old grease in the button is making contact between the wrong places, this might explain the problem. Shop Talk section should have the button maintenance desciption for you.
