My friend's Valk sat all summer, they spent the hot months in a more northern locale. When he returned, it was the usual...wouldn't start or run without major choking. We loaded it with some Techron and it helped but didn't cure, so he ordered replacement slow jets. After installing them, it starts up and runs like a bandit....until he gets around 3rd gear. From 3rd on through 4th and 5th, he said it seems to bog down....almost like running out of fuel. At highway speed, if he twists it the bike will hesitate, then move on out but not like it should. I set the pilots at 2 turns out after installing #38 slows, a setting I've used numerous times with good performance. It was late and he had to return home in the dark(trailered the bike over), and we didn't get a chance to sync the carbs. That's the first thing that came to mind, but I also asked him ahead of time to release the gas cap and take it for a ride....just to eliminate one possibility. When we removed the carbs, the bowls had a good collection of mud in the bottom so I let them all soak with some strong cleaner before using an air hose to blow things clear. All the passages seemed clear at the time we reinstalled the carb bank.

Some time next week, I'm hoping to get with him and see if we can pin it down. First thing will be a sync, but I want to check the plugs and possibly the timing. I have no idea if the t/w or the belts have been messed with and neither does he....he's not the original owner. Before I continue on the bike, I'm looking for other suggestions.  Anybody?

Fuel flow issues.
The higher the gear the longer the engine requires high fuel volume. The carb bowls are not getting refilled fast enough.
That's my 2 cents!

Eddie, I was thinking along those lines also. If a sync doesn't help, we might start looking at the fuel delivery. I didn't see anything wrong with the hoses themselves, so the next thing might be the petcock itself....bike has around 37k as I recall and is ten yrs. old. Be nice if it was as simple as a kinked vent tube, I should be so lucky.

I would remove the tank and make sure of the petcock if you are sure the carbs are clean and air passages are all clean.

We also desmogged it while we were in there. First thing I'm going to check is the vent line, then carb sync, then the petcock and the tank filter. I just love taking the tank off....again.  Sad

I agree with Tundra.  I have a Pingel waiting to go on my I/S when I desmog it..  Iirc, Eastern Performance still has their sale going on.  http://www.easternperformance.com/products.php?product=Pingel-Hex-Chrome-90-Degree-Forward-Petcock-for-Harley Use the coupon code BF2010 for an additional 5% off.  Bring the price down to roughly $80 with free shipping.

John, I had a rust problem a few years ago with a new to me I/S. When I removed the petcock screen it was clogged and pretty much colapsed from the pressure of the fuel and the fact that it couldn't flow properly. I had a good load of red sediment in the bowls as well.
I wonder if your friend's problem would be relieved somewhat if the petcock is set to reserve. It may not be as clogged in the lower portion.
Anyway, the screen sounds like a likely culprit to me.
