I'm watching the news as I type this and they have said nothing about the shooter other than they have him......Update...22 year old white male.

TUCSON, Arizona — Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona died after being shot in the head while meeting constituents at a grocery store in Tucson, NPR reported on Saturday.

Giffords, a 40-year-old Democrat in her third term in Congress, was shot point blank by an unidentified gunman who fired indiscriminately into the crowd, NPR and other U.S. media said.

About a dozen others at the meeting were shot and the gunman was wrestled to the ground and taken into custody, Fox said, citing an eyewitness.

Giffords was airlifted to a hospital to a hospital after the shooting.

Re-elected in the November 2 election, Giffords focused on immigration reform, military issues, stem cell research and alternative energy while serving in Congress. She was married to U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly.

Its a shame that happened in AZ where open carry is allowed and no one took care of business as far as the gunman was concerned.  Someone in the crowd did stop him, wudda been better if they gave him a good dose of his own "medicine"

Open carry is allowed, with or without a permit, in most states. Most dont realize it tho.

Fed judge John Roll was killed in the incident. He is the judge involved in a $32 Million lawsuit involving illegal immigrants. When he ruled to allow the suit to proceed, he received over 200 death threats in one day. He had security for a month last year due to this. The shooting spree lasted only 20 seconds which prevented a carrying civilian from helping. Shooters name is Jared Lee Laughner. He's obcessed with literacy issues. Giffords will probably survive but to what capacity is not known.

Gun ,,, Bomb,,,a Car with him at the wheel, a truck with him at the wheel.

Small Plane Stolen or a Helicopter.

All would do the same damage, but the question is why did he do it.

Not how he did it.

No question though someone with a gun would have made a difference as he just walked up and

started blasting away.

One in the groin area would have been a show stopper.

But this was Demo Rally or Congress on the corner, the gunman had reason to believe they would

be unarmed and he felt he could get away with a lot of damage in that case.

A republican rally, he may not have fared so well.

Senseless tragedy to say the least. Affected many lives and a nation.

That could have been his reasoning,, to inflict pain on others to get attention.

AL

Parabellum

If you want peace, prepare for war.

The word Parabellum is a noun coined by German arms maker Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken and is derived from the Latin saying si vis pacem, para bellum, meaning If you wish for peace, prepare for war

I disagree. If it takes me 20 sec to recognize what is going on and pull my gun from my Bianchi, then I really need to practice drawing more.  ???

The two that tackled him did the right thing.

If shooting in a crowd was a bad idea for him, it would be for anyone else as well.

You are responsible for every round fired.

The point I was making is if criminals think the crowd is armed they are less likely to

pull a stunt like robbery or murder.

But this is maybe and with some evidence a person that was trying to change the government

by killing a relatively high up elected reperesentative.

He talked about the currency of the US and going back on the Gold Standard, wow pretty heavy

for a nut with a grudge.

Proven fact is, where the public is armed, violent crime goes down.

A armed society is a polite society.

Carry on my ,,,,,,,,carrying friends.

The guy below lived in my hometown for awhile I remember him from my young bar-hopping days....He's been on Kentucky's death roll for 25 years.I also know one of the women that was with them while this was all going down ( she died in a car crash several years ago ) ....They wrote a book about it........Just sayin' death roll does'nt mean they will die soon.

HODGE, BENNY LEE, DOB 8-9-51, was sentenced to death June 20, 1986 in Letcher County along with Roger Epperson for the murder of Tammy Acker. The murder occurred when Hodge and two accomplices entered the home of a Fleming-Neon, Kentucky physician on the night of August 8, 1985. They choked the man unconscious, and stabbed his daughter, Tammy Acker, to death while robbing him of $1.9 million, handguns and jewelry. He was arrested in Florida on August 15, 1985. He also received a second death sentence on November 22, 1996 for the murder and robbery of Bessie and Edwin Morris in their home in Gray Hawk, Kentucky on June 16, 1985.

But, you see, your speculation was dead wrong.  You recognized this and quickly deleted your original post after finding out the killer was a white American resident of AZ.  Here’s some speculation to ponder:  This killer is obsessed with using gold for currency.  Is he a Glenn Beck worshiper?

Your paranoid rant about Mexican drug violence spreading across the country doesn’t scare me as you intended.  As yourself this:  Where does the money come from to buy these drugs and fuel this violence?  Look into the mirror for the answer.

Very astute observation Marty, you're probably right.

And because Eric Holder is an avowed socialist and a personal coward, the Justice Department probably won't seek the death penalty.... as would the State of Arizona.

Not to fear, so long as the Fed leaves out at least one murder victim from its prosecution, Arizona can still prosecute a capital murder charge following the Federal trial.  No double jeopardy violation there.

In either event, we are likely to see an insanity defense.

For additional reading on the subject...

This morning we pray for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her family, and the other victims of the heinous violence in Arizona.
It should not be, but the media, under the guise of “a full exposition” of the evil in Arizona, is back to subtly and not so subtly pinning the blame for the attempted assassination of the Congresswoman and the related shootings on the tea party movement, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, me, you, and everyone right of center.
Let’s be crystal clear: this is the supposedly objective news media doing this, not the openly, partisan left, though it is fueling the media witch hunt. And from what we now know, it is not just media malpractice, but a lie.
Ironically, by perpetuating the lie — by even treating it as a legitimate topic of consideration to revisit the accusations of violence and hate the media tried to run with prior to the November election — that the right and the tea party incited this evil act, the left and media may very well incite violence against the right.
Today, the Sunday Shows will all be from Arizona. There will, I have no doubt, be many of them wanting to know if “rhetoric” and “tea parties” and “opposition to Barack Obama” did this.
They will also bring up, as they did yesterday, Sarah Palin putting Gabrielle Giffords on her target list for defeat with a rifle scope symbol over her district.
Here is what will either not be brought up, or if brought up, will only be mentioned in passing.
Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos, the largest left-wing community online, put Gabrielle Giffords on a target list with a bullseye. Just as Sarah Palin removed her post, Markos has removed his.
Another Daily Kos writer, just the other day, penned a post saying Congresswoman Giffords was dead to him.
But then there is the real culprit — the shooter himself.
A friend of the shooter’s described the shooter as decidedly “left-wing” as recently as 2007.
On YouTube, he flagged as a favorite video one of a person dressed as a terrorist burning the American flag. Only a lunatic or a leftist would do that.
His favorite work was not a Glenn Beck book, but a staple of every left-wing bookshelf, the Communist Manifesto.
In the Communist Manifesto, there are numerous, frequent calls for violence against the bourgeoisies.
Left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall’s most recent book calls for a violent response from the left against the right.
Barack Obama himself told left-wing activists, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.”
The point of all of this is not to blame Ted Rall, Mr. Obama, Media Matters, MSNBC, any other particular person or group on the left, or the left in general. It is also not to say in any way, shape, or form that the guy is of the left. If, however, we take the evidence as presented and not as the media and left would have it presented, the shooter very clearly is not of the right.
More precisely, the shooter is neither left-wing nor right-wing. He is crazy and evil — a word not used enough. The guy is very clearly not of the tea party movement, not a Dittohead, not led by Sarah Palin, me, or anyone else on the right.
But the media, at least as of this morning and its accumulated coverage so far on this matter, could not care less. The media is intent on yet again exploring right-wing rhetoric and tea party hate. Left-wingers yesterday were falling all over themselves to blame everyone on the right for the horrific shooting.
The media today, as it begins more expansive reporting, will not let the facts get in the way of making the right, yet again, responsible for violence it neither incited nor enabled. In the process, the media’s credibility will continue to shrink.
By the way, as an exit thought, the tea party movement won in November. Winners don’t go on shooting sprees.

Well pulling my gun to protect myself is stopping the shooter. I could be next. I'm not gonna wait till he shoots a round near me. Depends to if AZ has the right to protect a third party law. Of coarse the police are gonna put you in custody, you shot someone. By then, if the scene is secure to your best intentions, I'd holster it and wait. Your gonna have enough witnesses to colaberate your story. Shouldnt carry if your afraid to use it.

Excellent post Doug.

I suppose we are stuck with "media spin" on every issue and current event (or my hemorrhoids) from here on out.  I happen to believe my right of center media is more fair and balanced than theirs, but I'm sure the left feels the same way.  I continue to marvel that I love my first (and second) amendments, but generally despise the press and media with an abiding disgust (not a mere disdain)... with some notable exceptions.

Not only are we stuck with media spin, but also media frenzy where larger and more numerous press organizations feed off controversial events and issues like some kind of rabid dog pack, with the natural result of ever greater sensationalism, and an attempt to control events rather than to report accurate, objective, truth.

Notice how Coach Rich Rodriguez was fired before he was, and Gabby Giffords was dead before she survived.  You would think these scum would have some shame and a desire to rise above spin and frenzy with a goal of professionalism...... little chance of that.

Whatever happened to Walter Cronkite?

There is some good discussion in this thread, but it's also been poinsoned by those who would use a crazed killer's act to push a political agenda.

I'm more than  a little disgusted, and since it's my job to represent the VRCC membership as a whole, this thread is done.
