Just got another CT.  The previous owner had a K&N air filter installed, adjustable jets, and the exhaust was gutted (Ragnar cut i'm told)  He said it ran great and some of you guys have said you rode with him at Inzane last year.  I'm planning on putting stock pipes back on.  Will I need to re-jet? Will the K&N work okay with the stock exhaust?  I assume it will.   Also, he had put a spacer in the front gas tank bolt , raising the tank, stating it was so more air will get in there.  Is that nessecary?

Thanks:
Bill

I have a K&N and when I bought the bike it was stock. It ran fine with the prefilter. Since then I've installed Thunder Valley headers, Dyna jet needles and played with the pilot screws. A recent dyno run proves it was worth it. HP $ torque figure were up slightly, but torque and HP curves were much more consistent than when stock. Prefilter is still in place.

You should be ok without any other mods.

What adjustable jets are you referring to (Dial a Jet)?  Or are they adjustable needles?

jrhorton-  I haven't had the carbs apart, but the "Previous Owner" told me they were adjustable needle jets.  Goody, who did the upgrade, says their Pro1.  Will I have to pull the carbs to adjust the needle jets?

I don't have alot of experience with the carbs outside of changing the slow jets.

sandy -  What's the prefilter?

The pre-filter is a piece of filter foam that lays over the top of the filter element. It is the exact size of the oiled gauze part of the K&N. It comes with the filter. If you don't have one, the PO probably tossed it away.
I talked to a K&N engineer years back concerning air flow with & w/o the pre-filter. He said the air flow is about the same as stock using the K&N with the pre-filter & air flow is increased w/o the pre.
Conclusion- with pre-filter no performance gain, no rejetting basically just a long life cleanable filter. Without pre-filter you may have to re-jet especially if you have other mods like free-er flowing exhaust.  cooldude

TT, that is my experience.  Rejetting following the k&N and Cobras got back the lost hp, all the way back to 90 hp at 5280 ft.
