While going through basic training in Texas, we were taught the Army’s phonetic alphabet. Once when being quizzed by our drill sergeant, I had to give the representative for the letter “m.” My mind went blank. I reasoned that since the letter “p” was represented by Papa, then “m” must be mama. Looking forlornly at the sergeant, I bellowed, “Mama!” “Son,” the sergeant responded, breaking into a grin, “even your mama can’t help you now!”
