I found this .... Anyone try this ??  Made me think of removing the wrinkled chrome from the alternator cover and then painting.

I was able to remove mine of by puncturing one of the bubbles and just pealing the chrome off by hand.  Be careful, it is easy to cut yourself on the plating.

Chlorine based bleach will certainly attack chromium, so it will take the plating off.  If you try this method, make sure you wear the gloves, and do this in a very well ventilated area.

may also want to try a heat gun. i'd probably go that route before chemicals.
