Has anyone with straight pipes had any issues getting failed by a state inspection?  The bike I picked up this winter is almost done and I got an extra set of stock pipes just in case.  I'm planning on keeping the stock cut pipes w/24" truck stacks that came on her, for the time being, but was wondering about passing the sound thing at inspection.

My money is on failing.
God I'm glad I live in Florida. Smart move you made keeping a set of stock pipes. I have 2 sets for our bikes... just in case.
I doubt Florida will get tough like the Peoples Republic of Mass. on motorcycle pipes with all the "Fests" & "Weeks" we have down here for bikes. At least I hope not! Shocked

I would ask around.  Know anyone in the local HOG chapter?  They might have a friend of a friend who does inspections.

I have not heard any feedback from anybody after building over 1,000 exhaust systems, all louder than stock, of anyone failing an inspection.  Not that it couldn't happen, just that it has not been reported to me yet.  I think the Harley guys have raised the bar, as it were, so our relatively quiet bikes, by comparison, even with non stock pipes, get a pass.  Incidently, Denver passed a law, I think it went into effect 1st quarter 2009, that any pipes on motorcycles that aren't stamped OEM, get a $500 fine.  I don't think it will pass a legal test, specifically re: the 14th Amendment (equal protection), but I haven't heard anything more about it since they passed it.

I've run straight pipes for years and haven't had any problems getting a sticker in Texas. I can install my purple hornies back in them if I have any trouble down the line.

I hope you're right MarkT.
Let us know on the outcome of any challenge to the Denver law. It could have a big effect on exhaust laws everywhere!

With all the furor of motorcycle noise (MECALM, MACALM) and how Boston has been treating motorcyclists i would suggest using the stockers for inspection purposes.

If the inspection station gets an opinion about you then approval becomes a nightmare. Those people can be very difficult to deal with!

Not to mention if you ever have to go back to them with a correction ticket!

NY is supposed to have some of the strictest inspections next to CA so I wonder how OCC gets away with unbaffled pipes if NY has a similar statute for inspections.

I got time yesterday to get my rescued 99CT with the straight pipes down to the state inspection station.  I pulled up to the inspection area and a Tech came out.  Told him the bike was new to me and asked if he thought the pipes would pass.  He said they didn’t sound over when I pulled up and went and got his decibel meter.  He started her up, held the meter about a foot from the pipes and revved her up to about 3K.  He looked at the meter, shut her down and said with a smile “It’s a little over, but I like the way it sounds”

why would you volunteer the info?  I'd just have left it at "the bike is new to me" and let him do his inspection.... Roll Eyes

I think you got lucky this time...enjoy

In Missouri, they will pass you with straight pipes as long as you have baffles for them.  At least that's what they do with the HD riders.  Never had a problem with my Viking pipes.

My reasoning was I didn't want a "rejected" sticker, if they even give them out for bikes.  If he said they wouldn't pass I would have put my extra stock pipes on and gone back.  Don't know if they do it for bikes, but for cages you don't get a second chance, you get a rejected sticker and alot of headaches.

I live in California and have never been required to get my motorcycle inspected.  Where did you get your information?

I've had an inspector in Texas who suggested that I should toss the baffles from my Cobras.... supposedly he did the same for his on the 2nd week after he bought the bike. He told me they sound a lot better without them.  Evil

colorado, like most other states have noise ordinances that can be used. most aftermarket pipes have disclaimers that say "for off road use only" that clears the mfg.

as police officers we tend to "not" write tickets for loud pipes (reserving our time for real crime) unless some moron with grass burners on his harley, or cobras on his valk, seems to think it is nessesary to run up and down the street in a neighborhood at midnight, waking up everyone and their babies. then we get complaints and have very little choice but to start writing tickets. remember - loud pipes "don't" save lives, they just make your nieghbors want you dead.
