At first I thought I had a loose bolt somewhere, but now I'm suspecting something in the drive line since I've checked all the bolts I can see. The chatter is about the volume & metallic sound as shaking a spray paint can - except even - like jake brakes on a big truck. Only occurs when closing the throttle at 2000+ rpms. Lightly closing the throttle lessens the noise. It started about 200 miles ago maybe & has gradually gotten worse. I'm about ready to pull the rear wheel, but thought I would get some thoughts here first. Thanks

how about some more info..like does it do it if ya pull the clutch in or if you lightly have your foot on the brake..seriously i'm leaning towards a big split in one of your vacuum lines..iv'e had mine chirp pretty loud that i thought something was loose to..

When you pull the rear wheel, pull the drive unit. Inspect the drive shaft pinion cup and the U joint.

I went ahead & pulled the wheel off. The splines & shaft all looked good. No play in the wheel bearings. The dampeners looked worn. They all wobbled in their sockets - maybe as much as 1/8". The lobe to the outside of the retaining pin on each dampener looked to be worn down about 1/16" - with the wear tapering towards the inside of each dampener socket. They will be replaced wheather this is the problem or not, but I feel like it is. The chatter only occured when I cut back on the throttle, which would be when these dampeners are doing their job. l did not procede on to removing the u-joint. I have not experienced a u-joint going out, so I do not know how it would behave. I'm guessing it would cause vibration under load. I could use some advise here. Exactly how does a failing u-joint sound or feel & under what conditions? This bike has 47,000 miles & has not been hot-rodded.

LACON....i doubt that you have a u-joint going out, but one thing is for sure...i would grease the end of the driveshaft splines/ grease the end of the driveshaft that goes into the piniion cup/ replace o-rings in rear drive/ and lubricate the rear splines real good. replace those dampenersas well. the honda # is 06410-MBH-000 (this is the one for the interstate model-it will work in the standard and the tourer models too, but this # has the metal incerts already in the dampeners, so you don't have to pay for them seperate.).

Thanks Goose, I just ordered that part # from HondaPartsLine.com. They list that same # for Std, Tourer, & Interstate. I guess they have simplified parts stocking. I would have preferred to just buy locally, but around here the dealer just orders what you want anyway & you still end up waiting - and then paying full list + tax.

Dampeners were no help. I stopped by a local Goldwing shop & the mechanic thought it may be a shifter fork. Will go back when he can get it on the rack for a closer look & to run it in place. Anyone had any experience with this? Looks like major work.

If you can alter the sound or make it go away when touching the brakes you would be getting a good clue about the origin of the noise.
Is the bike de-smogged?

if its just on decel, you might have something loose on the inside of the muffler.

Well, I pulled the rubber U-joint boot back & the joint looks like it's about to disinergrate. the bearings appear to be coming out of the cups. Glad it's not in the transmission. I would have thought it would have made some noise under power though. That's the reason I did not think it was the U-joint. For future reference, chatter while coasting - much more so with the clutch disengaged. Does not matter if in gear or neutral. Braking or not has no effect. Worse in 4th & 5th gears. Now to find a U-joint.

To close this thread, Willow helped me with a good used u-joint. Got it swapped out, & it runs smoother than before. Evidently had been going bad for a while but so slowly that I did not pick up on it until riding after it was fixed. No problem replacing the joint with the swing arm in place. This is about the 5th time I've had the rear wheel off, & each time before it slipped back in place into the rear drive easily. This time I fought it for about an hour & it just would not seat. My daughter stopped by & I whined about my progress & she started looking & pushing things. Then it just slipped in. All is good again. Thanks, Willow

Did you thoroughly clean all the metal bits out of the swingarm? Those bits can work their way into the drive unit input splines.

Yes, I used aerosol carb cleaner followed by a rag on a straightened out coat hanger until all was clean. Then sprayed with silicone as a rust preventitive.
