Buzz bolt

I believe I have the buzz bolt problem on my 01 IS.

The way I read it, the solution is to take the long bolt out, smear with silicone, and reinstall.  If I read right, the tube it goes thru is loose?  Sometimes it will not tighten up, so you need to put a washer on the end of the tube, so it will clamp in there, and not vibrate?

Any other tips?

You get a buzzing noise in the 2-3000 rpm range.  Quite annoying.  The bolt is vibrating. It is a long one that crosses from side to side, tying the downtubes together.

I had it bad.  I never used any silicone, but I sure cranked on that bolt.  Had no one to put a socket on the bolt head (you can't reach both sides alone), but didn't need to.  Yes, sometimes, despite cranking hard on the nut, it seems the frame is too stiff to get the crossover tube tight (so shimming the tube inside the frame would be called for.

Put a loud set of pipes on the bike and you will never hear the buzz.

Seriously, I wedged a box end wrench on one side and stuck my air gun on the other side.    I hit that button about 6 times on the gun and I've never had a problem since.      I never needed a washer as my air gun had the torque to put the binders on that bolt.    That was 12 years and 200K miles ago, also, NO silly cone and no washer.........

Add a washer and ya got another spot to rust, and add silly cone and IF ya tear it apart for some reason, ya got a firkin mess to clean up in the process.    So do it right the 1st time and no need for the other crap.   JMHO.

If you really want to crank down on that bolt it would be advisable to remove the nut and lubricate the threads on the long bolt and also inside the nut.

Anti seize lubricant would be the best.

Simply trying to tighten a nut is fraught with peril especially so if the assembly has been static for a length of time.

Proper tools are a must!

yep..know what your talking about..i put up with that annoying noise all summer last year..this winter when i replaced the thermostat..i drilled a hole about 2 inches in from both ends and installed allen set screws..went for my first ride today..and no noise..i was pleased..last year i cranked that bolt so tight with a 1/2 inch drive 2 foot ratchet that i thought i was going to break it..never tightened far enough to remove the noise.
