I filed mine on Sunday 10th or April Smiley

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- You get three extra days to file your taxes this year. They'll be due on Mon., April 18.

But it's not because of a previously announced processing delay that will prevent people who itemize their taxes from filing before mid- to late February, the IRS said Tuesday. Instead, the bonus days come thanks to Emancipation Day, a little-known Washington, D.C., holiday that celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district.

1083Email Print CommentEmancipation Day falls on Sat., April 16, but it is observed in D.C. on Fri., April 15. That prompted the IRS to extend the tax filing deadline to April 18 this year. Under the tax code, filing deadlines can't fall on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.

The last time an extension was granted for this reason was in 2007

LOL... yeah, I panicked this morning when I realized the date.  When online to e-file an extension, found out I have 'til Monday... but, I'll probably still file an extension.

Gawd, I hate doing taxes!!  There's gotta be an easier way!

I have been staying out of this so far.  Have not even opened the thread... but it's like a train wreck I guess and I just HAD  to come in and LOOK.

FairTax.

Wouldn't it be great to not have to file?  To be able to KNOW how much money they are actually taking from you?  There is NO way to know right now.  There are WAY too many hidden taxes.

Wouldn't it be great to make American made products competitive globally again?

How about how nice it would be to be able to take home ALL of your paycheck?  To be able to DECIDE how much taxes you're going to pay?  How about how nice it would be to be able to collect taxes on all the illegal money from the plethora of illegal, money making opportunities available to people?

Well folks... the FairTax will do all that for you AND give you a bag a chips...

well, not really the chips.

I just sent them $10720.66 myself to the fed...  Penalties follow... the bastards...

Seems if I had been a minority (read that as other than white and a man) that I would have been wavered on the penalties.  However, since I am a "white" "guy" I get to pay all of it!  cooldude

Hurray!  I get to pay it all!  Doesnt matter if my customers cant pay me as well!

It doesnt matter if I did the work and havent gotten paid.... im a white man and I get to pay a penalty that is as much as or greater than (yet to be seen) the amount owed.

Truthfully, that was the first question when I called the IRS.. "Are you a minority employer?  If so we could wave your penalties".  As if that had any thing to do with why I was behind on my deposits.  I was behind because I got stuck for 30k by a customer.  It didnt matter my race or gender until it came to the federal gov.

Obviously, if I am "other than a white man" I am somehow due a exemption.

I have to pay my bills yet the FED gets to grant themselves a pass on this matter.

To you folks of color who read this. I have nothing against you.  However, equality cant be pursued with a policy like this.  Equality is "equality".  I havent discriminated against anyone.  The crimes of the past arent inherited by children of today.  Im deeply sorry and offended by the treatment of some in the past.  Yet I have committed no crime.

Being a vet myself and having 13 fellow Marines that I personally knew that GAVE their lives for their country YES I will be griping.  Perhaps not for the reasons you may think...

Having hung my arse out there on the line for what I believe I think that gives me and other vets a unique perspective.   I put myself in harms way because I believe in the American Dream.  I believe in each human having individual rights.  I believe in equal protection and equal enforcement.

Equality is equality.   Period.  Im not griping that I have to pay a fine.  Only that I am in the ONLY category to have to pay a fine.

If a disabled vet did what I did.  Or, if a person of color or a woman did it.  The action is the same.  I failed to pay the tax because I did not have the money.  That is not a reason for preferential treatment.  For what ever reason, that is the fact.  Im not asking for a pass.  In my case it is because I wasnt paid.  In other cases it may be for any number of reasons.  The fact remains that I am penalized ONLY because I am in a certain category while others who may be guilty of the same fault, crime, what have you...  are given a pass...

I dont believe in any preferential treatment what so ever.  I disagree with the prejudice of the past and present.

Humans are humans.

Citizens are citizens.

I have put my a$$ out there on the line for my beliefs.  Have you?

Treat us all the same.  No job quotas, no tax breaks, ...

I get tired of hearing vets talk about "hanging their ass out" as a reason for suggesting that someone is getting better treatment than them. So what, you did it by choice. No one asked blacks if they wanted to be discriminated against and we, myself included, benefitted in the systems that discriminated, and just because you can't see how doesn't mean it didn't happen. There are any number of books you can read on the subject that has documented how even well meaning whites benefitted from the discrimination on minorities.

I mentioned this program since you only mentioned minorities (non-white, non-male) in your post.  There are a lot of government programs like these.  Are they completely fair and equitable to everyone?  Probably not.  Do I worry what someone else gets compared to what I get?  No.  The world is not perfect or fair.  If you can change something, do it.  If you can't change something, don't fret over it.

I think you need to re-read the posts preceding that post.  Look at the context and read all of my comment.  I was ask by Bobbo if I expected Vets to recieve preferential treatment.  My answer to that was no.  However, I think Vets have a unique perspective in that they have written that check to our nation for an amount up to and including their lives.  Whether it got cashed or not isnt the issue.  The willingness of the person is the point.

I joined the military because I felt an obligation to my country.  I didnt do it for the money nor to make a career out of it.  I thought I needed to pay a bit back.  So far as hanging my ass out there.  My job was dangerous.  Those 13 deaths I spoke of.  That was in peace time.  Flying in helos in the early and mid 80s and developing the night vision goggle doctrine was a costly endeavor.  Two of those 13 were room mates.  We did put our lives on the line even in training to develop the rules.  Most of the time they only cost us a scare.  Sometimes they cost lives.  10 lives in one particular crash and others in separate accidents.  Look at the V-22 Osprey program in particular.  They were dropping those aircraft out of the air like crazy in the mid to late 90s.  It took folks willing to put their neck on the line and take the risks.  The guys and gals flying in those things werent special.  They strapped it on every day knowing the risks and they put it on the line.  Sadly, most of the public has forgotten them or never cared to even know of their deaths.  The same for the guys in A-Stan and Iraq.  A significant portion of the public could care less.

So yea we DID hang it out there.

Ive currently got some health issues.  Have I tried to suck the government tit and go to the VA?  NOPE.  It isnt related to my time in service.  So, I dont expect a damn bit of preferential treatment.  Not for my race, religion, gender, gender orientation, age, marital status, status as a vet,...  Not for anything.

My expectation from my government is that it treat us ALL by the same standard.  Isnt that what you want???

I'm not sure of the point of this post.  I will say that the US does not have a tax treaty with Singapore... or most anywhere else for that matter.  Therefore, I pay tax in the US, and I pay tax in Singapore... doubly taxed on my earned income.  I do get an exclusion on earned income, which I exceed, and all other non earned income is taxed at a rate as though my income were not excluded... mostly the max rate.  I pay taxes in the US and in Singapore.  Does this make me a 'good patriot'?

Here's the thing.  I laugh at the people who call themselves 'patriots' but refuse to suffer any personal inconvenience like higher taxes, to save this country.  So called 'patriots' that only think about themselves and not the larger issues.

I earn a pretty decent rate of pay, and I am OK with a tax increase on me to make this country whole again.  Contrast this against the tea party yahoos who would rather drive this country into the ground than to sacrifice to make it better.

Truly a sorry bunch of people.

Jabba, know you are well meaning, and the idea of a 'fair tax' is bullsh*t.  If you are an employee of a company, maybe a flat tax works.  But it doesn't work at all when it comes to taxing small business.  You still need to allow for deductions, for differences between high volume, low margin, and low volume high margin businesses.

I never see the flat tax people address the business issues, only employee issues.

The "point" is IF you are in favor of higher taxes, then PAY THEM. Don't force your want or perceived need for higher taxes on the rest of us.
Some of us are VERY disgusted with the way our hard earned tax dollars are wasted & spent. Therefore we resent the collection of so much of it OR any suggestion that we are not paying enough.
I am very happy for you that you have a good income & are able to live a good lifestyle. cooldude
As far as your double taxation issue, that is your choice to live in Singapore & I'm sure you reap the benefits of U.S. citizenship and being able to live & do business in Singapore.
I have lumped you in, due to your posts, rightly or wrongly with the libs I see calling for higher taxes & more Gov. involvement/control of our lives. Taking higher amounts of tax money from people is one of the best ways to restrict liberty & freedom from everyday citizens.
Therefore I merely suggest if you wish to increase the amount of your "contribution" to the Gov. go right ahead.... just don't force it on the rest of us who don't.  Cool

Just in case you don't get my Bush tax cut reference here goes. Over the years I've heard all kinds of caterwauling about the 2001 rate cut by a bunch of high profile libs. I always wondered if these very same libs put their money where their mouth is & paid their own personal taxes at the old higher rate they so love.
My guess is not. Wink

I though this was an interesting story...

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/03/25/60minutes/main20046867.shtml

People (or corporations) that actually have money that could help save this country are
prevented from doing so. People in lala land probably think corporations should ignore
their shareholders and just cough up the billions, but while they're holding their breath waiting
on that to happen, perhaps the government will adjust the tax codes...

Strom Thurmond was in favor of term limits, but he wasn't stoopid enough to participate in
them voluntarily.

If I believed for one MOMENT that paying higher taxes would mean less government bloat, less waste, less bureaucracy, less nanny state in my business all the time, and actually stopping deficit spending and paying DOWN the national debt, I would cheerfully be for it.

However, it's really hard to accept that the government needs more and more money when it continues to increase it's spending and waste by leaps and bounds. I think at this point the only way we're going to REALLY bring the government back under control is to starve the beast. No tax increases, and cut up the government credit cards, stop the increases of the debt ceiling, and force the politicians to live within our means.

Serk, I concur entirely.

The only solution is to cut the head off the monster, but with tact and truth and common sense, and the best honest PR we can muster with a perpetually antagonistic leftist media.

Because, to do so, we must get and keep the moderate-center on our side.  Libs and conservatives will never change..... this is a given.   And it is close thing between nanny state lovers and right thinking Americans.  This is why I think we'll have to go at it a piece at a time.  It will take perseverance and patience, but will only be successful with middle American moderate support.  We MUST run up to the 2012 elections in the majority.    JMHO

I am often tempted when filling out government forms when it asks race and one of the choices is African-American, to select African-American.  I am not black, but they aren't asking that, based on the possible answers, they evidently want to know heritage.  According to a National Geographic program I was watching the other night, every single person on the planet can trace their genes back to Africa, so technically, we are all African-American.  Its just a matter of how many generations you want to go back. Things I wonder about.

Carolyn and I built our house ourselves... during the pre-move-in-stage, we had our kitchen and bathroom
in a travel trailer, and we lived here:

When the 2000 Census came, we got the short form...

Where do you live?                       South Carolina
How many rooms in your house?      one
Do you have running water?            no

I think we might have become eligible for government assistance  coolsmiley ...

No one needs to call them anything.  You just have to examine some members actions to determine their culture...  Start with Marilyn Davenport.   uglystupid2

A point of the Fair Tax is businesses don't pay it.  Businesses simply pass on taxes to their consumers anyway.  The whole way thru the chain until the end user, who CAN'T pass it onto someone else.  That's the point.

Read the books.  Study the idea.  Then come tell me I am full of crap.

Wrote one big honkin' check to mail this morning.

Headline in the paper today (dallas news)

"50% of US households will pay NO income tax."

This system sucks.

Don't forget:

the part of Social Security that your "Employer" pays.
Gas tax.
Sales Tax.
Property tax
inheritance tax
luxury tax
sin taxes
car registrations
Valkyrie registrations (Valk related now)
hunting and fishing licenses
handgun license fees
all the little fees on your internet, telephone and cable bills
all the little fees on your electric and gas bills
tolls
hotel taxes

and he hardest of all to notice... the embedded taxes.  You know... the 20% of the cost of EVERYTHING that is actually the taxes that the company that made the widget your buying "paid".

tax revolt.

I don't mind paying what I pay... I just want it to be intellectually honest, and trackable, so we can hold the bastards accountable for fleecing us.

Also don't forget "INFLATION". The biggest baddest tax of them all. Silently taking your wealth every second of every day since 1913.

I can't believe how most people are totally oblivious to Inflation as a tax. The Fed openly admits that it wants inflation at at least 2% per year. How do you think they plan to pay back debt. They pay past debt  with current cheaper dollars. And current debt with future cheaper dollars and so on. Deflation is what we need, but do you ever think they will let that happen? NO way. Never. Until it all collapses. I'm with you Jabba. People need to wake up.

So tell me why... oh WHY do we keep re-electing the same old RepubliCrats?

The Dems and the Reps are laughing at us because we just keep swinging the pendulum.

Until we start electing someone from other parties... we're gonna keep getting more of the same.
