Author Topic: I'm wondering if this tire wear is normal?  (Read 1536 times)

The leading edge of the grooves in the tire are wearing down faster than the following edge resulting in an unusual wear pattern. I am getting a flat area in the center but I expected that.
Both the front and rear are doing it, the rear is more pronounced though. Dunlop E3's. I ran the first 5000 km with 35 psi in the rear and 40 in the front ( a mistake I know). Since then I've been running 42 and 45 rear.
Tires only have about 6000 miles on them.
Is this what is meant by cupping?
Any suggestions as to how long I should keep running these.

I'm not very good at converting Kilometers to miles but my last rear tire an Avon Venom was worn out at 8000 miles. Mine also cupped badly and the center had the cords showing when I noticed it. I ran 41 lbs in it. I see alot of comments that cupping is pretty much the norm for a Valk.

Thats normal wear for an avon with low air pressure !!!!

I run 42 F and 46 R. I get 14K on the rear and 24-27K on the front. No abnormal wear: I consider some cupping normal.

After I began running 42 front and 46 rear, the cupping went away. And they lasted alot longer!
Now that I have a car tire on the rear, it is 38psi.

Had the same problem with my stock dunlops.  Low pressure with lots of throttle twist cooldude

That's a Dunlop and not an Avon.  My last two purchases have been E3's and I'm getting about 18K out of the fronts and 22K on the back.  I run 42 psi in the front and 43 on the back, if you stay on top of the pressure, and that's the key, you'll find them to be great tires. I've not had any cupping.  As far a your current issue, I'd still run them down to the wear indicators.

I finally got the cover off my Valk, and that is what my E3s look like. I'm down to the wear marks so am changing rubber this week. It's like the leading edge is wearing and the following ar trying to peel up. Just the way they react with the road, I guess.
