Got in a few more of VA's Covered bridges yestrerday......

I didn't set out to take them in.

But, I found myself in the area and decided to swing by and check them out.

All three of them are near Newport, VA in Giles Co.



Link's Farm Covered Bridge
This is one of the three historic covered bridges in VA that are privately owned.
It sits beside the road that goes to Mountain Lake (this is where the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed).





Sinking Creek Covered Bridge
This one is just off of SR 42.



C.K. Reynolds Covered Bridge

This is another historic bridge that is on private property.
It sits on an old farm beside SR 42 between Newport, VA and Newcastle, VA.
As you can see it doesn't seem to be in very good condition.



New Castle, VA

This is the view of New Castle from an overlook on SR 42.

I had forgotten what a nice ride 42 is between Newport and Newcastle.

Actually, all of the sections of 42 are a "FUN" ride.

I've got a couple of errands to run this AM (on the VALK of course) and then I'm thinking about riding from New Castle to New Market and taking in the remainder of VA's covered bridges along the way.  This is along some of the best "back roads" that VA has to offer. Alot of it is along the longest of the three sections of VA SR42.

After all the weather man say's 80 degrees today.

Which means I must ride.

With the weatherman promising 80 degrees today a long ride was called for.

The weather was absolutely GREAT!!!

And I got in 358 miles.

Not a record by any means but a respectable day.

The first covered bridge was Humpback Bridge near Covington, VA.















From Humpback Bridge it's about 90 miles to Meem's Bottom bridge near New Market, VA.












Like the sign says this is VA's only covered bridge that still carries traffic.

The "lanes" are about 3ft wide and are raised about 2 inches from the floor of the bridge.

This was the first time that I've ever ridden across a covered bridge and it was a little disconcerting during the first couple of passes.

But, I kept at it until it felt comfortable.






This sign is posted at the approach to Meem's Bottom Bridge.


There's still one more covered bridge that I need to find.

It's near the Meem's Bottom Bridge but I didn't have enough info to find it today.

I still plan to ride to these bridges at least once more this summer. 

The ride along State Routes 42 and 311 is "most excellent"!

Isn't there a VA covered bridge out near waynesboro/Charlottesville. I think we passed it on the way to Skyline Drive. I had a local giving us a tour so I don't really remember where we were. Just out off the beaten path (I think it was near where the path beat one for the locals Suzukis).
My remember gets fogged sometimes. Things blur together.

That sounds like Meem's Bottom Bridge.

New Market, VA is very close to the Skyline Drive.

The bridge that I didn't find yesterday is located on private property and is in the same area as well.

Humpback is a neat old bridge.

The park around it is also very nice.

I liked Meem's Bottom Bridge because I could ride through it.

A little research has led me to discover that there are alot more covered bridges around than I realized.

"Ginger" and I have made an effort to tour Lighthouses when we go to the beach. Maybe, we'll start touring Covered Bridges as we travel around the country.

It's as good of an excuse as any to go for a ride.

I have ridden in all thoses areas and most of the roads you mentioned....forgot all about that area until your post....we rode over to the Blue Grass, Valley where we used to live, thats near Monterey Va....also some beautiful country and not far from Seneca Rocks....we need to get a ride back in that part of the country, there's alot to see and do in that area..

Sounds like a good idea to me.

There are alot of good roads to ride in that area.
