While riding today  i started having issues with the neutral saftey switch on my '99 Std With approx. 16k miles.  It will Show neutral (on the idiot light) when going from 2nd to N but not from 1st to N and for entertainment it wont do this every time. Wouldnt normally be a problem but it seems that without the idiot light coming on the bike wont let me start up with the side stand down. Can the switch for neutral be adjusted, or easily replaced? Where is it even at?

Are you having any trouble pulling the lever all the way to the grip?

It is behind the front trans cover. I have the part ordered. Engine oil and anti-freeze must be drained. Also water pump will have to come off to remove cover. Don't forget to order a new gasket. tickedoff

Since it wont let you start in gear with the kick stand down it could be the brass bushing on the clutch handle or the switch thingy on the handle. I miss the light on occasion but I figure its my foot work.

Alright, checked the clutch lever, no play in it, and can pull it all the way to the grip with 3 fingers like normal. When I pull it in, I can feel a very distinct switch like click. Is there any way to test the neutral switch, and the clutch switch?

The problem he described has nothing to do with the clutch safty swith. He asked about neutral switch and if there was a test. Here is the TEST ! Remove the right side steering side cover. Disconect the RED 4 prong conectorand check for continuity between the light green/red wire terminalof the engine sub-harness side connector anb ground. There should be continuity when trans is in neutral and not when in gear. PAGE 19-15 in the service manual !   uglystupid2

I have a 2000 Standard that NEVER shows neutral. even when bypassing the clutch safety witch it will not start with the kickstand down.

Real PITA. Glad it's the wife's bike and not mine...

Damn, now I'm gonna have to fix it.

It sounds that the problem is not with the light but rather with not being able to find neutral.

Which is a shifting problem.

When the bike is in neutral and the indicator light is on there is no problem with starting.

When the bike is in gear, the neutral indicator light is off and the bike wont start.  Which is normal when the kick stand is down.  Put the kickstand up and pull in the clutch and the bike will start.

The indicator light is grounded by the shift drum rotation and if you are not completely in neutral the light will not come on.

So it seems (again) that the problem is in shifting and specifically, finding neutral. A dragging clutch can exacerbate the situation.

The suggestion would be to see if the clutch needs bleeding and to also look at the shift linkage to be sure is is oriented properly.

There have been some remarks (past threads) about (foot, boot, shoe) size making shifting difficult resulting in the same kind of problems.

If I recall, this bike is pretty new to YP so it may simply be a problem of becoming accustomed with the bike and it's particular idiosyncrasies.

Ok, I did it again leaving work today. and now after reading the new replys, I'm wondering if i'm not putting it completely into neutral coming up from first when I park, etc. When i went to go down to first to pull it back up to N I had a hard time catching the gear (bike still off) and had to rock the bike to get it to drop into 1st. I'll try to be a bit more crisp on my shifts, and see if that helps. Will let ya
know. And yes marty, I've got the shop manual form the sister site.  Very nice....

Because of the transmission type that it is, shifting into or thru the gears is very difficult with the motor not running.

Even with the motor running there is never a sure thing being able to shift thru the gears.

As said, "having to move the bike back and forth a little" is the only way, at times to allow the transmission to shift into gear.

That is the nature of the transmission and will always be present!

YP: I'm with Wizzard on this one, One of the guys in our riding group had a 2001 STD with 21,000 miles that was impossible to find neutral on. We did everything listed here, fluid change, lever bushings, changed position of shifter to no avail. Rode it for a year just starting it in gear with kick stand up. finally removed front cover and replaced neutral switch, all was well with the world again.

Alright it did It when leaving work today, and when I got home this evening. i spent about 10mn both times ( looking like an idiot both times) shifting from 1st to N and 2nd to N.  It shows N Every time from 2nd,but almost never from 1st  (maybe 3 out of 20 times) It was physically in N every time, tested by letting out the clutch, but it just won't show it going from 1st. So that leaves me changing a neutral switch .   Cry

My neutral switch is touchy as well, in that when I for sure am in neutral (between 1st & 2nd, engine running, clutch out, not moving) the N light is not always lit unless I do some fiddling.  All it usually takes (after it is physically in neutral) is to push down ever so slightly on the shift peg.  One of these years I might pull it apart and see if I can eliminate the problem by tweaking something.
