The Twilight Zone

« on: June 21, 2011, 06:16:47 PM »

Thought I'd share this with ya'll. I was sitting at a redlight and a Mazda Miata convertible pulls up and a guy I've never seen in my life, catches me off guard hollered " Why didn't you buy you a Harley?" I told him "A Harley wasn't big enough or fast enough for me- and this baby's got 6 cylinders!" and revved her up and he just grinned. He said he just bought a Harley the other day. Yeah right, he'd be riding instead, probably ain't got a moped! Lol 2funny crazy2

Then last week one of my buds riding a VTX 1300 with straights said mine sounds like a Volkswagon! Evil Cry  I had to pull my baffles out to ride with them now since a couple of weeks ago I hit my starter while she was alteady running cause I couldn't hear it! Shocked I told him he is just jealous- and he is!! He wants to buy it but don't want to come off the hip! 2funny 2funny

Lots of people BUY harley's.  Some ride them.  The riders are just as serious as any of us.  The posers are a waste of air.  Talking to them is absolutely a waste of time.  I have a guy at work that BOUGHT a 2002 still has under 3k on it.  He has ridden it to work about 4 times.  Three of those were the first month after he got it.  This weekend he was working on getting the old gas ( September)out of it.  He didn't even get that far.

met 2 couples on sunday sitting on the edge of the road close to the house. stopped by to see if they needed help. both on sharp HD full dressers. they said they were just resting their legs. the one looks at the valk and said "what is that, never saw one with the engine sticking out the sides before".
he was tanned so i know he gets out. even when i told him it had the same engine as a Gold Wing he said, "never saw one stick out the sides before". then i remembered, the GW you cant see it stick out the sides.  2funny

That was one of the main reason I bought my Valk- to be different! Plus I love it for all the reasons on this board. Yep, I get that a lot-"What is that?" We had a huge ride yesterday celebrating the local Marines that come home wounded. It was a huge event with about a 70 mile ride and around 500 bikes. Guess what- I was the only Valk there like I thougt and Looked to be about 98% Harleys! I am really starting to feel out of place! Lol  I've had my share of Harleys and problems. The newer ones supposed to dependable but I've bought houses cheaper! No Joke! 2funny

Myself-i likes being different. I've also had more than one guy and or gal tell me to buy american. Even after i show the(enter your own description here) person it is indeed made in america-the usual response is-well it;s still a rice burner/jap bike etc etc. I really rather enjoy intelligent questions about my ride of choice. Besides-when they get to frisky-they get a first hand lesson on exactly how quick the back side of my valk gets way small-way fast. 2funny Been on 3 poker runs already this year. Lots of v twinkys-one valk-mine. coolsmiley But as i stated before-i can handle the pressure. uglystupid2 RIDE SAFE.

"Why didn't you buy a Harley?"

Because I am too smart to fall for the marketing aimed at lemmings, intended to get them to spend 3x the money for a ride that is louder, shakier, slower, and less reliable.

Because Harley's are the MOST efficient way known to man, to convert gasoline into noise and vibration WITHOUT the side effect of horsepower.

Because Harley's are generally 1910's technology @ 2040 prices.

Because I didn't want to have to dress like a pirate.

Because I am accustomed to a little more "Girth" between my legs.

Remember the song "Lonely Man"? that's what I feel like out there! Lol 2funny I can see why a lot of youngens are buying harleys..there's a lot of peer pressure out there and I can feel it! But it don't work on me cause I've had my share of harleys and now appreciate a good bike! Everyone should at least own one harley in there life and get it out of their system! I wouldn't mind owning a new UC but ain't gonna pay more than some houses I've bought before. If I did buy one it would have to be the UC CVO 110ci. so I could at least have some power and comfort at the low, low price of $40,000.00!! 2funny BTW before they discontinued the VTX 1800 (Honda never learned after the Valk and both were made for 6 years) I could have bought 3 of them for one UC and outrun the 110 Screaming Eagle!! Ask me how I know! 2funny crazy2

Yep my son's one of those " if it ain't a harley I ain't riding". Funny part is one time we were going to the lake together with some friends and he wanted to come and bring my grandaughter. Well as usual his fatboy was tore up and had the guts to ask me if he could borrow my 1500 Intruder!! Then I reminded him of what he had always said and made him eat crow- feathers and all! 2funny 2funny

Another thing, these hard core harley owners don't think about the Hondas, Toyotas and other Jap and European cars they own!!!  2funny

I have a 1100 ACE that matches the Valk. I have made offers to friends at work that if they want breeze on their knees we could ride and they were welcomt to ride the Shadow. They said they only ride HD. I asked where their bikes were and we could ride this weekend. Neither had a bike, but they love to ride. I called "POSEUR" and they havent gotten a bike yet.

There is just nothing like the valk.  I have one cousin who owns an 2006 Goldwing and another who owns a 2011 Victory Cross Country.  When we are parked, I would say the majority of the people who look at them stare longer at my IS than the other two.  They just can't get over the size of the engine.  Now when I ride any other bike, it seem lacking in size.  Some it feels like I am riding a bicycle.

The only references I can find describe H-D's efforts to survive the 1930's depression by selling engine design blueprints and tooling to the Japanese.  They merely produced a copy of the engine, not refined it.

I might be one of the first in this group to own a Harley, a 1935 45 ci (750cc) flat head.  Foot clutch, hand shift, girder forks. In all fairness the bike was worn out by the time that I bought it in 1947.

It was only an intermediate step to a British Matchless.  True, it did have a relaxing sound to the motor exhaust ( engine back then).

Today, HD is OHV, foot shift, hand clutch but still is air cooled, a draw back IMO.  However, the Springer fork(girder) was brought back and was popular I guess.

Whatever faults that Harley has, they have the BEST  PR and advertising group around, unlike Honda who lost the way.

Would I buy another HD............NO.  I can't abide the air cooling and the high price.

Price I understand (though dynas are quite reasonable) but why does everyone carry such a torch for liquid cooling if it's not necessary (emissions not withstanding) and does not affect reliability or longevity? Because it doesn't affect either anymore, not even in sunbelt states.

Solo1 you've really got a collectors item there and no telling the value on that baby! I remember my 82 year old dad talking about his Harley 45 and how he was going around a curve and hit some oil that sent him through a candy store window hasn't been on one since! Lol  2funny

Liquid cooling rules.During our toy run a few years back the traffic handlers got things messed up.We were speeding  up and stopping 30 times a mile. After a mile or two of that all you could hear and smell were spark knocking harleys and 50w oil.

Really? Cuz I've done it on both Harley and a Buell (much higher compression) in much hotter weather than Daytona in March and never had a problem. On the other hand my liquid cooled ZX7 and 954RR would both overheat in traffic. So how is it that it will "sure fry a Harley"?

While I admit that Harley Davidsons are the best motorcyles ever built & all of us Jap Junk riders bow down to Harley owners coolness, the kind of coolness that we can only aspire to have, I must share an experience I had 2 Biketoberfests ago.
While sitting in the traffic on A1A waiting to get to Main St. {as a local, I shoulda known better} I passed 3 air cooled American made bikes on the sidewalk "cooling down". A bit up the road the feller next to me on the left had a very loud HD idleing kinda high, making noises & smells that as an old drag racer I recognized as not good. Without saying a word I made a gap & motioned to him to cross over in front of me to get to the sidewalk. He waved back in appreciation & made it to safety.
To be fair I'm sure he had lots of HP mods, his bike was far from stock.
I felt bad for them having to miss the fun they came to have & deal with their problems but one thing was for sure, they looked totally BADAZZ while sitting there.
True story.
