When I got home from work(8 mile ride) the side stand was floppy. It wouldn't stay all the way up or down. Looked under and the spring was there. Looked closer and found the bolt it hooks to is snapped off. The fiche diagram isn't very clear but I think I need #6--- 90111-MZ8-000 special bolt.

http://www.hdlparts.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=148690&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=2001&fveh=3475

 It doesn't show on the diagram but there is a nut and a wire holder on the top side. The wire holder is visible in the upper right of the pic.  It looks easy enough to get out from the top. Just want to make sure I'm ordering the right part. What is suppose to be in the wire holder? I know someone will say a wire. crazy2 I can't see how the wire to the switch would reach over that far.

Here is a couple pics.

I read on here about putting nickels in the spring coils to install it. Seams pretty straight forward. Am I missing anything?

Only thing you're missing is order more than one. Some creative folks (not me) have replaced that bolt with a hardware store eye bolt, grade 8 for improved life.
The nut is still attached to the top part that is broken off.

Go to the microfische for "Frame"
>>> Sidestand Bracket = #10
>>> Bolt = #11 - Hook, Spring
>>> Nut = #19 - Nut, U, 6mm

Do you know what bent the bolt ?
I posted this in 2008 when my bolt was bent.

When my side-stand went limp I found the pin bent. I must have pushed the lift a little to far under the bike. Measured the needed clearance between the end of the lift and the side-stand. Cut a piece of 2x4 that size. I place the board against the side-stand on the floor which makes a safe stop for the lift.
I used a bolt with nuts to replace the pin, my bike shop didn't have the pin in stock.

I built one from the hardware store a used one of their springs and then ordered the replacement from HDL. Still carrying the replacement spring and bolt in the saddlebags. It's been about four yrs now.

I think I know why that bolt will eventually break.  The metal plate with the hole in it designed to secure that bolt allowes it to bend back and forth  just a little, but over time you all know what bending metal back and forth does.  yep! crack!

When mine broke, I made a new one from a hardend bolt from ACE hardward and built it up with spacers, then ground down the fat part until it was a tight fit into that hole.  Now it cannot bend back and forth at all.......been on there for years.

That is a clamp/holder for the fuel tank vent line.  Yours is either just not in the holder (common) or its been removed, not a huge deal, but it is possible to over fill the tank and have gas pour out the vent and all over the bike if that hose isint there...........Ive never heard of it happening, just saying its possible

Do you know what bent the bolt ?

... running over something that kicks up beneath the scoot and hits the lowest part of the machine.
... running over a high curb and the lowest part of the machine drags when going over it.
... loading in a trailer or pickup with too steep of ramp so bike bottoms out on the lowest point.
... with bike on a lift, and with sidestand in lowered position, don't have the lift arm touching the stretched spring, adding additional side load to the already tensioned spring/bolt.

my guess... Yrmv,

Yes Yes. I should have waited for your replies. I called my local Harley/Honda shop Z&M and they had the #6 bolt that I thought it was on stock. Drove over there and he brings it out....nope that's not it. So he looks through the fiche and sure enough it's # 10 on the frame diagram. Thanks sheets for the correction. I was just to fast on the trigger. So he doesn't have it on stock so we ordered it.
If I really need to ride this weekend I'll go the hardware store route and rig something up. If not I'll just wait till it comes in. Chris- I'll have to look for that stray vent hose.

To keep riding When that happened to me I just got a bungee and bent one hook around the sidestand pokey outey piece and hooked the other to a saddlebag mount. Worked so well I left it for a year.   Embarrassed

I'll have to take a peek at that bolt. Thanks for the pics. Intermittently my kickstand has not fully retracted. It stops half way in its swing. I nudge it with my boot, then the kickstand retracts fully. I thought that I might have bent the spring after bumping it with the arm of the lift jack, but perhaps the problem is the bolt.

I keep a small bungee cord on the bike that I used when mine off. twice.  Hook it to the side stand and to the rear peg. Works as a quick fix.

I got a screw head type bolt from the hardware. Its a SS one. Couldnt get a grade 8 in metric. I think this the reason I went with the SS one.

I like to include pics. It saves a lot of typing. It would be difficult to explain how the stand was not working and the bolt broke off but the spring is still on there without a pic of it.
How about some pics of these various hardware store fixes?

I have no pix.
I put a nut on the new screw, near the head of it. Put it thru that hole in that little plate in your pick and screwed it into the side stand. Put the spring on at the head of the screw. Screwed the nut up to the spring. Turned the whole screw into the stand just enough the spring wont catch on anything. Its actually just a tad under the side stand frame so nothing will catch on it.
I used a screw type head so its easy to repair on the road if needed. The SS screw is a grade 5 I think is what the guy said. I need to back it off a hair as the spring catches every so often.

My opinion is that stainless is not a good material for that particular part. Might not rust but certainly is not strong enough for the duty it faces.

Carbon steel = much better.

Grading for stainless is not equivalent to grading for carbon steel in bolts and screws.

In my earlier post I said "Grade 8", but that is SAE. In metric, the higher grade is 10.9.
Sorry.

Just my 2 cents but I would order a spare bolt,spring and nut. I have had 2 break. Keep a spare in the side bag now with the correct wrenches handy.

My spring fell off in the garage today   Cry  ...I am thinking of welding the bolt thingy back on...any thoughts?  I did not look, but how is the bolt thru the frame...is there a nut on the other side?   I have rigged a bolt and nut there for now and am waiting for the red lock tight to dry before letting bike down from the lift...

Yes there is a nut on the top side. 10mm I think. I don't think I would try welding it. It is very easy to change out with a new one. The piece that is in there will come right out once you get to the nut. If you have to wait for the part you can easily rig it with a bolt and a couple nuts for the time being.

Like custom1 said, the broken threaded part will be very easily removed as you remove the nut on the back side.

Very easy!

You can call me anytime John.  About $5 for bolt and new nut and washer. Should be in on Thur.  Headed to the mountains so will have to wait until next week to install.  Now to break the red lock tight... tickedoff

Fairly easy to change out the bolt.  Watch BigMac, out of SoCal, fix his while laying on his back in from of one of the cafe/vister centers at Crater Lake.

I was on my way to the Blue Gray ride of 2009 and hooked the that bolt on a high bump while making a tight turn in a gas station and tore it right out along with the spring.  Mad6Gun had a zip-tie and my bungie got me to ground zero where Chrome helped me out. Now I carry a spare  6mm bolt with .

But I still kept checking it every couple miles all the way to Ghettysburg... I was afraid of the kickstand would drop down and throw me off while making a tight left turn.

Thanks again, Adrian for the spare!! It's still working.
